Wooton Z. Bassett (called "Snookies" by his mom) is a main character in Adventures in Odyssey. He can relate with all the kids in Odyssey, despite the fact he is in his 30s. Though he is very childish in nature, he takes his faith very seriously.
Wooton has described himself in different episodes as being overweight; he has also described himself as being 6’1”. He is also described as in his thirties #572: “Odyssey Sings!”. Wooton lost twelve pounds when he, Bernard, and Whit were on Connie’s diet in #513: “Do or Diet”. He lost another five pounds in #671: "Fast As I Can", when he fasted eating junk food.
He loves grocery shopping, as he expressed in #563: “Tuesdays with Wooton”.
History
Early life
He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but moved to Alaska at the age of 10. For most of his early years, he was teased by other kids in his school, about things like his hair, his love of mushrooms, and his weight. In (#837: “Out of the Picture”), Wooton vaguely mentions a time in his life where he was having a real hard time at home, which led him to move to Odyssey. At 6 years old, the Bassett family was driving through Odyssey, when their limousine broke down near Whit's End. (citation needed)
Career
Wooton often fills in for the employees at Whit's End for short periods, though he once was fired for being late for his job because of his help at Whit's End.
Mailman
Wooton is the mailman for Whit's End and a good portion of Odyssey, including Sycamore Lane, the home street of Wooton, the Hamptons, the Washingtons, the Rathbones, and the Straussbergs. He once delivered to the McKays' street when a mail-lady named Wilma had an operation, in #573: “Back to Abnormal”. He often changes or veers from his intended mail route in order to help his friends, like in #487: “Plan B, Part 4: Resistance”, avoid certain people or animals (such as a cat in #628: “The Highest Stakes, Part 1”), or to save his time. His altered route has taken him through a pond where he needed a snorkel, a large group of bushes, and the zoo. A dog once attacked him on his mail route in #563: “Tuesdays with Wooton”. We also know that Wooton delivers PowerBoy comics on Tuesdays, as well as oil change coupons.
Wooton often has strange and unusual accidents during his mail route. Some of these mishaps include soaked mail, oatmeal covered mail, mail covered with peanut butter, an "incident with a steam roller", and a run-in with turtles and bananas. These mishaps can sometimes cause small problems such as in #640: “Rights, Wrongs, and Winners” when he accidentally delivered a package to Harlow Doyle that caused many people, including Harlow himself, to think he wrote the PowerBoy comics.
Comic Strip Writer and Illustrator
Wooton is the recently revealed creator of the PowerBoy comics that he loves so much, explaining why he is often mulling over obstacles that PowerBoy has to overcome. He now writes Captain Absolutely comics and is starting two new comic strips called Drake the Cosmic Copper and Sleuth Family Robinson. He also created a character named "Marvelous Molly," who appeared in a stage play at the Harlequin Dinner Theatre.
Personal life
Family
- See Bassett family
Wooton is a member of a very wealthy family. His Grandma and Grandpa Bassett are missionaries in Africa.
Wooton also has a twin brother named Wellington who is the exact opposite of Wooton. While Wooton demonstrates a strong Christian faith, a love for everyone and a selfless desire to help people out, Wellington is cynical, greedy, uncaring and snobbish towards everyone, and has taken advantage of Wooton on several occasions. Nevertheless, in A Very Bassett Wedding, Part 2, Wellington tells Wooton that, despite their differences, he does care about him. He even shows some protectiveness over Wooton throughout the episode, when he thinks that an old lady took advantage of Wooton's naivety and picked his pocket while helping her. Wellington was Wooton's best man in his wedding. Wellington's daughter, Talia, takes kindly to Wooton.
Wooton's father was revealed in #624: “Wooing Wooton” and like Wellington, Wooton's father is mean and has written Wooton out of the family will.
Wooton's favorite cousin is Wilma Bassett, and has a relative named Chloe who milks giraffes.
Wooton is good friends with the family butler, Bradford, and enjoys spraying him with silly string. Bradford tells Wooton that he is like a son to him in Out of the Picture. He was also the one who told Wooton about Jesus.
Wooton is married to Penny Wise.
Wooton's great aunt is named Polly, and he says she beeps like a clown.
Friends
Wooton seems to be a friend of most citizens. He is especially good friends with Grady McKay, Colby Cabrera, Penny Bassett, Connie Kendall, and of course, Whit.
Wooton and Colby Cabrera made a nativity set in Wooton’s yard out of Popsicle sticks and even won the most original nativity set contest.
He has a treehouse with a drawbridge in his backyard that Grady often helps him build. Grady and Wooton almost built a moat around the treehouse but decided not to because there were not any alligators. It was while helping Wooton work on his treehouse that Grady asked Wooton to help him pray to be saved which was more important to Wooton then receiving a ten-prong fork in the mail.
Wooton once had a girlfriend, Victoria Jamison, but could not marry her because she was not a Christian. Victoria and Wooton seemed to have everything in common from banana splits with the bananas substituted for licorice to the Pool Boys. Wooton and Victoria met at an auction and instantly fell in “like.” It was in the same auction that Wooton would have bought a hideous statue to hang up a ski suit and a full Pool Boys collection if Connie would not have intervened. Wooton's relationship with Penny Wise took a large leap, as seen in the last episode of The Ties that Bind.
Hobbies
Wooton can play any instrument, such as the saxophone, banjo, organ, and piano, as long as he plays "Camptown Races". Wooton even uses his saxophone as a toothpick! However, in #675: “A Thankstaking Story”, Wooton proves that he can play more than Camptown Races, at least on his harmonica.
Wooton collects Smiley Meal toys and already-chewed green gum. One of Wooton's favorite things is fresh licorice, especially when it replaces the bananas on a banana split. Wooton tries many different recipes, including peppermint lemonade (which turned out to be a disaster). He also invented a ride-able vacuum for Marvin Washington. Wooton’s favorite hobby of all happens to be helping others.
Wooton seems to have an attraction to animals, as he has raised and taken care of many different animals. Included were seven porcupines whose names were Greg, Peter, Bobby, Marsha, Jan, Cindy and Alice. He also raised a duck named Gertrude and a baby owl named Dr. What. Wooton even named a moose Dexter while living in Alaska.
Wooton has tried out for part in a Harlequin Dinner Theatre production. He has also been on the radio on many different accounts. He can make different voices to entertain kids. One time included Wooton co-announcing a baseball game, in which the listeners learned that Wooton does not even like baseball. Wooton can get off topic when talking on the radio; he once told a story about how he rode a tricycle down a ski slope when the topic was about donating blood. Wooton has even hosted a game show to settle a dispute between Connie and Eugene in #610: “Hear Me, Hear Me”.
Wooton also likes to joke around.
Name
In #616: “The Other Side of the Glass, Part 1”, Wooton explains that his name is Old English for "village by the wood."

Trivia
NOTE: Wooton's house burned down in #760: “The Ties That Bind, Part 10”. Notes that refer to his possessions may be outdated.
