Lizzy
Description
Lizzy is a character from The Blackgaard Chronicles (book series). She is described once as the "lost love" of Philip Glossman, and the only person who could truly bring out the best in him.
History
Before the events of the Blackgaard Saga, Lizzy and Philip Glossman attended college together. The two loved each other, but their differing goals and lifestyles caused them to part ways. After he graduated, she returned to her home in England and her simple life there, while he ended up in Odyssey.
Opening Moves
In Chapter 3, while awaiting a call from Regis Blackgaard, Philip Glossman takes out an old pocketwatch with a photograph of Lizzy--a "combination college-graduation-going-away present" from her. He contemplates what might have been, and thinks that they could have had a happy life together if he hadn't been so stubborn. Remembering Whit and Jenny, he realizes "They could have been like--the Whittakers."
Glossman decides to leave Odyssey and find Lizzy, in hopes of marrying her and moving so far into the country that no one--particularly Blackgaard--will ever find them. However, at that moment, the phone rings. He answers it and finds Blackgaard, with new instructions for him. At the end of the call, however, Blackgaard reveals that he knows about Lizzy and threatens to hurt her if Glossman ever thinks of running away from him again. Glossman promises that he won't. As soon as Blackgaard hangs up, he collapses into his chair.
Pawn's Play
In Chapter 3, Glossman spots the recently-fired Eugene Meltsner at Mansfield Computers--a possible future site for what will become Blackgaard's Castle--and decides to talk to him. During the course of the conversation, he mentions that the Campbell College computer department is hiring, and offers to put in a good word for him. Eugene refuses (although he later applied and got the job).
As Eugene departs, Glossman wonders why he offered to help Eugene... that is, until he remembers Lizzy. She told him once that "people have a duty to help others when they can." Fingering the pocketwatch in his coat pocket, he realizes he offered to help because it was something she would have wanted him to do. However, he quickly convinces himself that he's simply gathering allies, and jerks his hand out of his pocket. "Best not to have those thoughts. Best to keep your mind on what you're doing."
Trivia
- Lizzy has golden-blonde hair and blue eyes.
- The name "Lizzy" may be a reference to Elizabeth McCusker, the wife of Paul McCusker, who voices Philip Glossman. They are even both British!
