Description

The Fillmore Recreation Center was a community center in Odyssey that was founded by Mayor Fillmore. It later became Whit's End.

History

The building was originally the home of Mayor Harmon Fillmore and his wife, Lucy, before being repurposed into a community center. Converted in 1934 as part of a Depression relief effort, it was designed as a place for wholesome activities like sporting events, games, and public meetings. Over time, it was also used by churches and civic groups.

It was used as a community center for family activities in the 1940s, It served as a hub for hymn sings, Bible studies, tutoring sessions, and plays.

It had old construction, as evidenced by the large, floor-to-ceiling cabinet from a previous era. This cabinet was so old and well-integrated into the space that Whit never thought to move it. It had a basement where a hidden room was discovered, containing the remains of a man tied to an old Odyssey Bank robbery case. The room contained empty shelves and smelled musty. The reception hall contained carved coordinates of the Titanic’s sinking location.

Whit purchased the old Recreation Center to turn it into Whit’s End, believing he had acquired both the building and the land. However, the city actually still owned the land, as it was part of McAlister Park, which was donated with the stipulation that it could never be sold. This led to legal disputes about whether Whit’s End, a Christian business, could operate on government property.

The building underwent renovations before reopening as Whit’s End.
