Featured Articles

Now that we have a "Featured Articles" feature, are we going to link it from the home page? I would assume we will eventually have a Featured Article section similar to the one on wikipedia, but perhaps we could at the very least make a "Click Here for our Featured Article!" link while we wait? --Dot.the.i 13:19, 29 October 2007 (PDT)

Yes, I totally agree with you. This is just the outer shell...as time goes by and availability allows I try to add more policies and templates and such to make the Wiki more manageable. If you have any ideas, suggestions, comments...by all means feel free to implement them or to ask me about them. The only difference I as an admin have from other users is the ability to ban Vandals and to edit protected articles, otherwise the site belongs to the users, do with it as you see fit, so long as it is reasonable and responsible. blipadouzi 14:05, 29 October 2007 (PDT)

Quotes

I agree that we need to have something between the quotes but I'm not sure that's it, how about <hr width=50%/>, I modified The Very Best of Friends quotes for a preview.Reddo 05:31, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Preloaded Templates

I figured out how to get the preloaded templates to appear when creating a new page. To use it go to a new page and a button should appear right above the editing box, click whatever type of page it is, (currently there is only episodes) and it will load the proper text. Any suggestions for more things to have besides episodes?Reddo 06:40, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

(P.S. I also figured out how to change/add things to the navigation box on the left hand side of the screen, let me know if there is anything you think that should be added)

Side bar

I added some things to the side bar, and removed some others to try and make the wiki a bit easier to navigate and find what you want quicker. any comments/suggestions for further changes? Reddo 20:36, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

New Album Covers

On the episode pages, where we have the pic of the album, should we put the old album or the new album cover? Or both? Rachel Maxwell 03:32, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

So far all the episode pages just have the one album art being displayed, unless it's available in a couple albums like a classics album. If you want to see the history of the way it looked you have to click on the album link Reddo 05:31, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Question about Tamika Washington

I'm pretty sure Tamika isn't the oldest child right? I mean I know Antoine is older, but what about Marvin? I always thought he was older than her. Somebody said Tamika was the oldest on her page. I corrected it, but I want to make sure I'm correct. Wikinewbie 03:03, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Search bar location

Connellsville or Connelsville?

Odyssey's neighboring town is being spelled two different ways, but there's so many mistakes I can't fix it by myself! Please fix any mistakes!

Bots

Does any know how to program a bot for Wikis? I have a couple of ideas for bots that would make certain tasks a lot easier, but have no idea how to write the script for them. blipadouzi 10:00, 29 August 2007 (PDT)

Character pages

Once again this is more of a public announcement than a message directly to you

I made a new blank template for characters to add to the list of preloaded templates (describe in #15 Preloaded templates above) it can be seen here, I also added a character infobox to Whit's page. I took out the list of all the episodes that there character has been in however, using the new cast infobox i created (described in # 8 new way to display cast in episodes) we can create categories of episodes that the character has been in, with sub categories of who they were voiced by. To see this category you'd have to click on the number of episodes that they were in.

eg. for whit's page: you'd click on the number 395 in the infobox and see a category with all 395 episode that whit has been in, at the top would be the 4 sub-categories Episodes with John Whittaker voiced by Joseph Cammarato, Episodes with John Whittaker voiced by Jim Custer, ect. for all the different actors.

Just a reminder that all of the entries in these categories and sub-categories would generate themselves from the information that we put into the episode pages.

The only problem that I could see with this is to keep the number of episodes accurate, however in mediawiki 1.13 (currently in alpha testing) there is a new function to say how many pages are in a category, once we are upgraded to the newer version the changes could be made entirely characters infobox eliminating the need to go back and re-edit the pages.

I was also thinking about what else I can add the the characters infobox, like nickname, birhtday ect.

I am in awe... I like the nickname and birthday idea-more of the characters have birthdays mentioned than I really realized. I really like what u did w/ the first and last episode thing! We definitely can differentiate between characters, the only question is how should we differentiate them from each other? Campbell County Community College

OK, the listing for Odyssey Community College redirects to Campbell County Community College, and they are not the same at all. The page is for Odyssey Community College. I have noo idea how to 'undirect' a page. Help? Rachel Maxwell 16:46, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

to undirect a page go to a page like OCC and it will redirect to CCCC, then on the CCCC page right under the title it will day redirected from OCC, then click on OCC and it will take you to the actuall OCC page and you are free to edit it as you please, hope this makes some sense, I'll leave it for you to do so you can practice it.Reddo 16:59, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Character Template

Redekop, did u say that the infoboxes on character pages would automatically update now when we put someone in as a character in an episode? Rachel Maxwell 04:17, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

The infoboxes will self update after we get mediawiki 1.13 installed, the new version is supposed to be released sometime this month. I've been testing out the new templates on preview versions of 1.13 and as far as I can tell the new versions of the templates all work using only what we've been typing in so far, and will add new things like the self updating the number of episodes and a few other little things, ex. on the book pages most of the release dates are blank, with the new version we can hide the entire released line if nothing has been entered Reddo 13:09, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Characters

I'm thinking we oughta have a category for book-only characters. (Fictional being inside a skit) Under real, Dead or Alive. Under Alive, Active or Dormant. (We can fuss over what 'dormant' means exactly later). Is that as far down as we should go? And maybe a sub-category for book characters. That could get slightly messy in the Kidsboro series since they show up in the eps too. I'm not sure about LCD, but for the Kidsboro shows and books I think we should wait and see if they count them as official AIO episodes, if so then definitely include them, if not then the same as we end up doing for the LCD, but then again I'm not really then person to ask, I do more the behind the scenes stuff like templates.Reddo 05:15, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

I personally am sad that they put Kidsboro in Odyssey, because now they've introduced all these brand new characters which makes me fear that the old/current ones will be phased out. Yah, but usually the books don't intertwine with the radio episodes-take Passages for example. There was one tie-in episode and we never heard about it again, but we got an awesome book series out of it! That's probably how Kidsboro will be. Sorry, I get very confusing sometimes! Essentially, they're grouped by number of appearances. Like instead of coming down with 'writers, directors', etc, it comes down with 1-25, 26-100 101-200, 201-301, you know. Category Table of Contents

Categorizing

I've been thinking about it and have some preliminary ideas for categorizing people: Fictional or Real (fictional meaning character on KYDS radio or something) Dead or alive, under that dormant or active (active meaning appeared in past 50 or 25 shows or so) , then kid or adult, Christian, not, or presumed not, and somewhere else we can do frequency of appearance or something.

Now about the places, I was thinking a restaurant category, one for stores, government facilities (like a police station), schools, residences (the Haven, nursing home, Le Hotel Odyssey, etc.) Areas (like McAlister Park) and Camps (or something like that) for Camp What-a-Nut and Timothy Center...

This is all very rough, and I'd appreciate any ideas anybody else has. Rachel Maxwell 06:03, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Sounds fine. I think the categories that you've come up with for places are maybe too narrowed down, and there would only be two or three of each in some of the categories, but I'd have to agree, you have something here.Wikinewbie 20:07, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

I agree it's very narrow...but that's where I need help. I'm thinking broad categories, then more narrowed down (think books, then Passages, then Draven's Defiance). So, maybe businesses, stores, Greenblatts. Mainly, I can't think of names for the categories, like what would Hillingdale or the Times go under? Maybe we should have a whole other section for newspapers? Times, Owl, Tattler... My widdew brain hurts...

I agree that we should try to keep the level of categorizing to only 2 or 3 levels, for the characters categorizing the active/dormant and frequency of appearance can be done very easily using a parser function and the current values enter into the character templates (after mediawiki 1.13 is installed), the other ways of categorizing them we would have to to ourselves, all sounds good to me though. Well, I don't think it NEEDS to be categorized at all, I mean people kind of take for granted that a town would have a police station, fire station, etc. Nevertheless there is that episode about the cowboy driving the purple firetruck. Vandalized

How come some pages get vandalized all the time and others never get touched? I mean, why are people drawn to the Novacom saga page??? B-TV: Compassion was hit all the time for awhile? Rachel Maxwell 17:26, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure, I'll take a guess as to the reason though. I'm guessing that somewhere there is a company that pays people to spam websites, now this company couldn't possible check every page of every wiki for spam so they probably have a list of the pages that they will check for spam when they are paying their spammers. they'll most likely publish this list on a website somewhere and then spammers will follow those links to end up on pages like BTV: Compassion and then proceed to spam them. Anyways that's why I think some pages are vandalized more than others, but you never know i could be wrong Reddo 03:42, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Sorry it took so long to get to that vandalism, I'm on vacation right now, if vandalism keeps happening blanking is the best idea so that people won't find it unless their looking for it and I 'll try to clean it all up sometime next week. I'll also contact Blipadouzi and ask him if he has any ideas of how to better combat the recent surge in vandalism. The one plus side to all of this vandalism (yes there is a plus side) is that it means our wiki is becoming more popular. right now we're receiving about 400 page views a day. Unfortunately, that is one of the drawbacks of an open-source website. Anyone and everyone can post. The best defense against these vandals is persistence and vigilance. Yes, we can block the user's and clean-up the pages...if one particular page is getting vandalised more than others, the it might be a good idea to partially protect it. Partial protection makes it so that only registered members and not IP addresses can edit the page, but even that isn't fool-proof. The vandal can just create a member ID for themselves and vandalise until they get banned. blipadouzi 14:28, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure advertisement people aren't going to want to take the time to create an account. That's too much effort don't you think? Templates

for creating a new page you should see a couple of buttons come up asking what type or article you want to create, click on it and it should preload all of the different fields for you, a guide to creating episode pages can be found here. The character pages I believe are fairly self explanatory, again there are a few fields that won't show up in the info box for now. If you have any more questions just let me know. We are planning on using the Fotf staff infobox for the actors, however this is a very complicated template and will not work until after our server has been upgraded, if you want to your welcome to go ahead and make a list of all the appearances that actors have made, however once our server has been upgraded the templates I wrote will be able to self generate the list of appearances for all the characters. Albums 1- 8

Pictures

So um, how do you load pictures onto this website from outside websites? I've tried to upload pictures of actors onto their page and just do a quick runthrough of the characters that they play. What are you supposed to copy? I haven't seen any codes or anything to copy... Dr. Bluegaard 00:02, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

to upload pictures

1. click on upload file in the left hand bar under toolbox
2. click browse beside source file name and find the file on your computer that you want to upload
3. fill in the destination name with what you want the file to be called
4. enter in short description of the file (optional)
5. click upload file

yeah a .gif files are fine, it might be a problem with the destination name that you entered, you have to put filename.filetype for it to work properly, let me know if you get it to work or not. Reddo 05:01, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

poll extension

the poll extension has been installed on our server, with this we can put a little box on every episode, book and movie page to let users rank episodes and get a general idea of other users opinion of the episode. There is also a comment box to leave short comment of what you thought of the episode.

here is the what the poll box will look like:

Hey it looks awesome! I think it should go right next to the um, box where the episode number, release date, etc. go. Only problem is that people are probably going to rate it even though they havent't heard it. They might just read the description and make an assumption from there. Should there be a few test questions about the episode to ask before one is granted permission to vote on that episode? Also it just looks like a playground for spammers. they might rate 1 star 500 times or so. sorry about the negativity, but this kind of makes me uneasy. Dr. Bluegaard 03:55, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

As far as I know there is no way to put in a few test questions before allowing somebody to vote, about the spamming thing, there is a limit of 1 vote per account/ip address, if you try to click the same vote again it will do nothing and if you click a different rating you just end up taking one away from your original choice and adding a vote to your new choice. go ahead play around with it. Passport to Adventure (and other album art we want to discuss)

So uh, when is the new and improved album art being released for Passport to adventure? I was going to order it but you guys put that up just in time! Also, are they going to redo all the "old" looking cover art, I mean i know that they probably won't redo the Gold Audio series, but are they going to redo the cover art for the rest, so like albums 15-42? The new version of cover art is supposed to be available sometime in august but depends on how mush old stock they have left. They are slowly redoing most of the cover art, 1-15, 47-50 and the lost episodes are staying the same, 16-35 are getting completely new cover are and 36-45 are keeping the same cover art but being re-framed to keep inline with the new style, I've started making a bit of a guide which can be found here Reddo 22:08, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

that's right this month the new version of album 17 was released, next month is 19, sept. there will probably only be album 50 (don't know for sure, they may re-release another album), I've been meaning to fill in the dates on this page, it's just I keep getting ideas for smaller/more powerful templates and I'm trying to get them all coded while I'm thinking of them, where as for content like the dates, it can be filled in anyting. I guess album 50 is coming out in august not September, (makes sense to have it at the live event), that makes 19 come out in September, 30 is in October and 25 in is November, 16 and 18 should be sometime next year, and The Truth Chronicles with episodes 645-657 is coming out in late September.
