Hal Smith's Final Season

This is the final season to feature the original Whit voice actor Hal Smith, as Smith would pass away on January 27th (see article Whit's Departure and Return saga for more). Whit's demeanor during this season sounds noticeably less jocular and more subdued than normal as a result of Smith's deteriorating health. Perhaps in response to this, many of the supporting characters would begin to take on larger roles during this season — a trend that would continue up through the next few seasons while the character of Whit remained written out of the action.

While #266: “It Began with a Rabbit's Foot” would be the last episode Smith would record before his passing, the final episode in the season to feature his voice work would be #271: “The Secret Keys of Discipline”. Many of the preceding episodes would be interspersed with others (like #263: “When Bad Isn't So Good”, #270: “The War Hero”, etc.) that were rewritten to feature the supporting characters in place of Whit after Smith's passing.
