The Case of the Candid Camera
Numbers 32:23
“The Case of the Candid Camera” is episode #207 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Phil Lollar, and originally aired on October 10, 1992.
Summary
Private Investigator Harlow Doyle gets pulled into a case involving a missing camera, a Bible contest and the always-suspect Rodney Rathbone.
Plot
Harlow Doyle is on the case! Rodney Rathbone has had a camera stolen, and he thinks someone from Whit’s End took it. It all started when he took his friend Denver Thor to Whit’s End to enter him in the Bible Bowl in hopes of winning tickets to Waterworld. Rodney set his camera down for a couple of minutes to go sign Denver up, and when Rodney came back, it was gone.
Harlow examines the facts and turns up nothing. Just as he’s about to give up, Denver bursts in, conscience-stricken. He confesses that the whole thing is a setup: Rodney needs the camera back because he took pictures of the answers to give Denver so he could win the Bible Bowl! But Denver says he has been studying. He thinks he has a good chance without the pictures! Lucy Cunningham-Schultz, who is organizing the contest, decides to give Denver a shot, and he actually wins without cheating!
Later, during a visit to a nearby shop, Harlow Doyle learns that a roll of film has been dropped off there by Rodney Rathbone to be developed. Harlow puts two and two together and realizes that Rodney dropped off the film after the camera had been stolen! How was that possible?
Lucy and Harlow get to the bottom of it. They discover that Rodney pretended to have his camera stolen.

- Trivia
- This episode is one of the very few shows that does not feature Whit, Eugene, Connie or any other main character. Lucy is the largest character in the show with 77 shows to her credit.
- It's possible that the title of this show is borrowed from the TV show "Candid Camera," popular program in the 1990s.
- This episode centers around a Whit's End's Bible Bowl — first seen in #4: “Connie Comes to Town”.
- Harlow tells Rodney in this episode that he has had one case in Odyssey so far; he is referring to the case of Jessie's lost faith in #196: “Harlow Doyle, Private Eye”.
- S.L. Clemens's name is probably a reference to Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Clemens.
- This episode was made into an AIO Activity Pack, The Harlow Doyle Mystery Files

Harlow Doyle: You took a whole city to Whit's End?!
Rodney Rathbone: Where's Denver?
Harlow Doyle: In Colorado! Oh, that Denver.
Harlow Doyle: Start talkin', and use your mouth.

Harlow Doyle: Reptilian-looking?! Rodney!
Harlow Doyle: I have personal experience with being ignorant.
