History

Mr. Fortum was a high ranking officer on a British Naval ship. He was responsible for whipping John Newton after he tried to desert. Later he brought Newton to meet Captain Barbary for his transfer to a slaving ship. He's also possibly one of the men to bring John to the ship after he'd been pressed into the British Navy. It isn't confirmed but there are similarities to a man in the boat and it's possible that Mr. Fortum was at a lower rank as this was two years before he had to whip John.
