Dobson Comes to Town

“Dobson Comes to Town” is episode #167 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Phil Lollar, and originally aired on September 14, 1991.

Summary

Dr. James Dobson comes to Odyssey! Whit and him talk about the upcoming video series and Dr. Dobson gives some advice to Melanie Jacobs.

Plot

Through a series of rather remarkable circumstances, a special visitor comes to Odyssey: Dr. James Dobson! He isn’t quite sure how he got into Odyssey or why he’s there, and he’s a bit disappointed when Connie and Eugene say they’ve never heard of him. But Whit has, of course. So Whit and Dr. Dobson take the opportunity to talk about some of the changes going on around town. They discuss the new animated video series and the daily release of AIO. While in Odyssey, Dr. Dobson also manages to help Melanie Jacobs. Then, he heads back to the Focus on the Family studios via, how else? The Imagination Station!

Discussion Questions

  1. If you hosted a daily broadcast, what subjects would you cover?
    • Why?
  2. Dr. Dobson helped out Melanie Jacobs. Is there someone you know who needs help?
    • How could you help them?
  3. What famous person would you like to meet?
    • Why?

Notes

Trivia
  • “Dobson Comes to Town” was the only time anyone real ever visited Odyssey as himself: James Dobson.
  • This is also the only episode in which a character (Whit, in this case) says the title of the show, "Adventures in Odyssey," during the action of the episode.
  • This episode was made to promote the Video Series as well as the fact that the audio series schedule has changed to a daily basis. The way the characters describe the videos (The Knight Travellers and A Flight to the Finish, specifically) and their respective appearances in them seems to imply that the Video Series takes place within the universe of the audio series. This development (and the Video Series itself) would never be referenced again, however.
  • Dale Jacobs mentions Focus on the Family's move from Pomona, CA to Colorado Springs.
  • Dale also asks Dr. Dobson if he has any "sage words" for his daughter Melanie Jacobs. This is, perhaps, an in-joke since it was Sage Bolte who played Melanie's older sister Robyn Jacobs.
  • When Dr. Dobson is talking to Melanie Jacobs, you can hear Connie's phone conversation from #12: “The Tangled Web” in the background.
Goofs
  • In the original broadcast version, Chris says that this episode is the 200th episode. But, as you know, it's the 167th episode. This "error" came from the fact that it was the 200th week of Adventures in Odyssey. 33 of those weeks had been re-runs of older episodes.

Reviews

Quotes

Dale Jacobs: It’s just you’re my biggest fan. Uh, I’m your biggest fan. I mean, my wife is your biggest fan. She listens to your broadcast everyday. You and Mike Carp.
James Dobson: Uh, Trout.
