Wooton Knows Best

“Wooton Knows Best” is episode #691 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on October 1, 2011.

Summary

Olivia and Matthew Parker compete for a chance to be Wooton Bassett’s camp assistant.

Plot

Wooton needs an assistant to help him with the kids while he works as a counselor to first graders at Camp What-A-Nut. Olivia Parker and Matthew Parker, excited to meet the camp's special guest Melissa Cyphers (and her techy husband Joel) compete for the position.

Wooton is hesitant to pick one of the kids over the other and discusses the problem with John Whittaker. Whit assures Wooton that difficult decisions are part of life, and tries to give him some pointers on letting the one he doesn't pick down easily.

Meanwhile, at church that Sunday, Wooton tells Matthew and Olivia that he has decided to determine which of them would be a better assistant by giving them a test. Meanwhile, they're both going to the first grade Sunday School class to see how they interact with the kids. Olivia asks Wooton what topic will be discussed at camp and he tells her it will be on 1 Corinthians 13 - love. Matthew is distracted from the topic by one of the kids and runs over to help them with the erector set. Olivia memorizes the verses Wooton will be teaching and decides that she is a shoo-in for the position. The next week, they return to Wooton's Sunday School class. After the lesson, Wooton gives them their test. Unfortunately for Olivia, the test is about the kids, and she has spent all of her time studying the Bible instead of interacting with the class. Matthew knows all of the answers, but Olivia just gets frustrated that none of the questions are actually about the Bible.

At home, Olivia gets angry at Matthew for "stealing" the position (and the chance to meet Melissa Cyphers) from her. Matthew disagrees, pointing out that they had agreed to abide by Wooton's decision. Olivia flies into a rage, causing her to get into trouble with their parents. Her dad tells her about a boy in his youth group when he was growing up who know the Bible backward and forwards but treated everyone in class badly. He asks Olivia to recite 1 Corinthians 13 for her - which she does, realizing as she goes that the verse has just been words to her.

Matthew apologizes to Olivia and asks her to come with their parents when they drop him off to go to camp. She agrees and is surprised by something Whit and Wooton arranged - Melissa Cyphers!

Discussion Questions

  1. Was it wrong for Olivia to memorize 1 Corinthians 13?
  2. If you were Olivia, what would you have done?

Quotes

Wooton Bassett: This makes the whole paper/plastic conundrum seem like a day at the beach.

Olivia Parker: So, what chapter in 1 Corinthians is that?
Wooton Bassett: Thirteen. You see, a lot of the verses and phrases in there are sort of... Hey, Legos! Can you excuse me a minute? Can I play?

Olivia Parker: I'm better with kids than you are.
Matthew Parker: Oh, right. Did you decide that before or after you dyed Camilla's hair purple?
Olivia Parker: You know that was an accident. Easter egg painting got a little out of control.

Wooton Bassett: OK, kids, that's it for this week. Make sure you come next Sunday because it's really going to be cool! We're recreating Israel's battle against the Amalekites in play-dough!

Kid: Was that supposed to be scary?
Wooton Bassett: Uh, not really. Here, eat some marshmallows.

Olivia Parker: Nothing has gone my way ever since mom has come home from the hospital and said, "Its a boy!"
Matthew Parker: Hey!
