A Most Intriguing Question
1 Thessalonians 5:11
“A Most Intriguing Question” is episode #564 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Nathan Hoobler and Paul McCusker, and originally aired on April 2, 2005.
Summary
Whit is doing secret experiments in the Imagination Station. Is that why a government agent is watching Whit's End? Connie, Bernard Walton, and Tom Riley take action to find out what’s going on.
Plot
Something big is happening in Odyssey! Whit seems to be tired & cranky. He blows past Tom and Bernard in his car without even waving. And then Imagination Station is left on overnight! To add to the drama, a strange man from the government has shown up in Odyssey. What could be going on? What does this man want and what is wrong with Whit?!
Out of concern for his well being, Tom, Bernard and Connie begin to investigate the recent mysterious happenings. They have equated Whit’s behavior to a mad scientist who will soon have bolts coming out of his neck. Every time they try to talk to him about what’s going on, he seems to get crankier about the situation.
Eventually, the three sneak into Whit’s End at four in the morning to try to solve the mystery. What they find is someone in the Imagination Station. They assume it is Whit and fear he is experimenting on himself. They are about to shut down the machine when Whit surprises them by stepping into the room! He asks them to leave, and the troop is escorted out of the room by none other than the man from the government. However when they reach the control room, they learn who is actually in the Imagination Station. It is none other than the long lost Eugene and his wife Katrina! Notes
- Trivia
- This show was preceded by the biggest Odyssey promotional campaign ever (at least for a single episode). For eight weeks, new clues were posted at WhitsEnd.org under the heading "Something Big is Happening." Special commercials aired on radio stations, urging fans to listen April 2. Bookstores featured banners announcing the April 2 date.
- This is the first time we actually hear Eugene in an episode since #499: “Exit” which aired in July 2002. However, it is the first time since #448: “Mandy's Debut” of May 2000 that Will Ryan has actually recorded new lines for Eugene.
- This is also the first episode to feature Audrey Wasilewski in the role of Katrina, replacing Pamela Hayden from earlier seasons. Katrina is heard very briefly at the end of this episode, in the background speaking to Eugene.
- Clips from #405: “The Graduate”, #286: “Tom for Mayor, Part 1”, and #4: “Connie Comes to Town” are heard from the running Imagination Station program in this episode.
- Both Bernard and Connie allude to the events of #211: “The Mortal Coil, Part 1” in this episode, with Bernard implying that Tom should recognize patterns in Whit's behavior from the events of that episode. Interestingly, however, though Tom was integral to the events of Mortal Coil, Bernard did not even make an appearance in those episodes.
- This is the second episode after #499: “Exit” that the staff of Whit's End tamper with the shop's security cameras.
- Allusions
- Bernard references Frankenstein in this episode.

Quotes
Bernard Walton: Mental health? Well then you must be watching Connie!
Connie Kendall: What if he's hurt himself and that's what set off the alarm?
Bernard Walton: Oh, now, that's a good rationalization. I'd stick with that, if I were you.
Bernard Walton: What took you so long? Don't tell me you showered before you came.
Connie Kendall: Well, you don't expect me to come out in public with bed hair, did you?
Bernard Walton: Yes!
Connie Kendall: Oh, poor Bernard.
Connie Kendall: Sounds like he's having a party up there.
Bernard Walton: Yeah, or you've got some very large mice.
Connie Kendall: <calling upstairs> Whit!
Bernard Walton: Have you thought about what we're going to do if it isn't Whit?
Connie Kendall: You can protect me with the hooks in your fishing hat.
Bernard Walton: Go ahead, Connie. And if he disowns you, I'll still be your friend.
Connie Kendall: Thanks.
Tom Riley: Are you doin' experiments on someone else, Whit?
Bernard Walton: It's that man from the NIH, isn't it? You two had a tussle and you've thrown him into the machine!
John Whittaker: Oh, Bernard, you're being ridiculous.
Bernard Walton: No, no, no, I was being ridiculous when I agreed to this idea twelve hours ago. Now I'm being absurd!
Eugene Meltsner: Nocturnal felicitations.
Connie Kendall: It can't be! I don't believe it!
Bernard Walton: Stuff me with spinach and call me a soufflé.
Connie, Bernard, and Tom: It's Eugene!
