The Election Deception

“The Election Deception” is episode #284 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on October 1, 1994.

Summary

When Courtney Vincent's diary disappears from her locker, events conspire against her hopes of being elected president of the student council.

Plot

It is election time at Odyssey Middle School. Courtney is running for class president against Shannon. But while Courtney is working on election slogans with Erica Clark, she picks up a copy of the Odyssey Owl school newspaper. There, one of Courtney’s poems is in print. A poem that she’d written in her private diary is now attributed to “Anonymous.” Courtney rummages through her locker. She can’t find her diary anywhere. It’s been stolen!

Courtney gets another shock at a political rally a few days later. The speech Shannon delivers is word for word the same one that Courtney is about to deliver! Courtney accuses Shannon of stealing her diary. Shannon denies the charge and accuses Courtney of letting the pressures of the election send her off the deep end.

Strangely, more and more of Courtney’s journal contents keep appearing. Private thoughts she’s written about her friends are revealed, making Courtney look bad. Finally, Courtney decides to drop out of the race. When she tells the principal, though, he produces Courtney’s journal. The school janitor found it in the trash. Then the principal tells Courtney that he’s figured out a way to trap the journal thief. He puts his plan into motion and traps the culprit — Shannon.

Courtney decides to re-enter the election — and she focuses her campaign on the importance of ethics.

Trivia
  • Recurring antagonist Shannon Everett (Ellis) makes her final appearance to date in this episode, though she is voiced by a different actress.
  • Listen carefully: the background music in the first scene with Courtney and Erica would later be heard as the music for the "Jumbo Fork" commercial in #313: “Top This!” (another Courtney and Erica episode).

Quotes

Rusty Gordon: It's all over school how you accused Shannon of stealing your speech. I like that. Making your opponent look like a lousy crook. Made me wish I would have done that.

Courtney Vincent: I've gotta get my notebook back.

Courtney Vincent: If I'm elected I think my first job will be to create a new committee.
Erica Clark: What kind of committee?
Courtney Vincent: A student council ethics committee.
Erica Clark: (laughs) Good call.
