Sideways was an alternate script of what became the 14 parter The Ties that Bind. The team decided to go a different direction with the series and chose The Ties that Bind. The reason for the dismissal of Sideways script was that the story more closely followed the importance of family. The Odyssey team decided that the other storyline would be better as it gave a more lighthearted presentation of the importance of family.
