History
Mary Newton nee Catlett was the wife of John Newton. She was the daughter of an Anglican preacher. John started courting her before he was pressed into the British Navy. During his time in the Navy and slaving fleet, Mary prayed for him and he eventually became a believer and they married. However, he still served as a slave ship captain for a few more years after his conversion and only after he quit did he and Mary wed. She was the first one to hear his hymn Amazing Grace.
Family
Mary is the wife of John Newton who wrote "Amazing Grace". She and John adopted her orphaned biological nieces, Elizabeth and Eliza.
