Life, in the Third Person, Part 2

“Life, in the Third Person, Part 2” is episode #627 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on November 10, 2007.

Summary

As her parents seem headed for divorce, Mandy Straussberg faces the future with a grim determination. Meanwhile, her father works on making his move to Chicago permanent.

Plot

After a bike accident lands Mandy in the hospital, she wakes with Connie at her side. Connie talks about her parents divorce, but Mandy shuts her out. Mandy breaks down and is mad at God. She tells Connie to help her so that her mom doesn't see her crying. Her mom Rachel calls Stephen when he and David are at a restaurant and David is complaining about how Odyssey is better. Mandy tries to figure things out and then her mom walks in and she wants to talk to Mandy, but she has to go sign forms.

After that they go home and start talking about the retreat, Rachael tells Mandy that she hasn't done enough for her marriage and how she and Steven stopped praying for their marriage. Mandy suggests she talk to her dad, Rachael refuses and Mandy asks why. Rachael tells her that she is afraid. Mandy then says, "Let's pray that you won't be afraid".

Meanwhile on a plane flying back to Odyssey, Stephen asks David if he was wrong about his mother and him. David answers "I can't tell you what to do. I think it is wrong because my whole life you and mom have been been my models for a marriage, flaws and all." Then David tells him that why don't they try just for him and Mandy. They get to Odyssey and David goes to Mandy's room noisily. Stephen and Rachael have coffee and talk.

Meanwhile, David and Mandy compare notes about their parents. Mandy reminds David about the time they were little when their parents had a big argument and he came to her room and they held hands and prayed. So they hold hands and pray. Stephen and Rachael talk about what happened at the prayer retreat. Rachael says they should pray.

Near the end of the episode Mandy decides to quit narrating her life in the 3rd person. She goes to Whit's End and talks to Connie and tells her about the good changes and at the end everything works out. At the end of the conversation, Mandy tells Connie that she has stopped narrating her life. The story finishes with Connie narrating her own life.

Quotes

Mandy Straussberg: Don’t! Your laugh makes my leg hurt.
Connie Kendall: Well, I’ve never heard that before.

David Straussberg: I can't tell you what to do about your marriage or how to make it work, but from son to father... yeah, I think you're wrong.
Stephen Straussberg: Why?
David Straussberg: Why? Where do I begin? Because for my entire life, you and Mom have been my model for what a good marriage is supposed to be, flaws and all. And now... I'm trying to figure out where our faith fits into all of this. All that stuff in the Bible about sacrifice... your vows, that's another thing. Who cancels the vows you made in church all those years ago? Those were vows to God, right?

David Straussberg: <loudly> So, ah, where's the slacker?
Rachel Straussberg: Shhh! She might be asleep! It took some effort, but we got her up to bed.
David Straussberg: <whispering> Okay. I'll be quiet. <shouting> Okay, wake up you little faker! I'll bet it wasn't even a car! You got knocked down by a kid on a tricycle! I WANT THE TRUTH!
