Camp What-A-Nut, Part 1

“Kids' Radio” is episode #36 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on July 23, 1988.

Summary

Brad and Sherman hit the air waves with their very own radio station: 'Kids' Radio.' But without proper support, the project is headed for trouble.

Plot

Brad Dillard loves radio. He tells Whit that he wishes a radio station existed just for kids. Whit is intrigued by the idea and shows Brad all sorts of old broadcasting equipment that came with the building when he bought Whit's End. Whit says he'll provide the equipment if Brad will run the station. Brad agrees and calls all the kids together. Everyone is enthusiastic, especially a nerdy little kid named Sherman who is a whiz at electronics. The gang all agrees to help Brad get "Kids' Radio" off the ground.

But soon Brad and Sherman learn that what kids promise and what they deliver are two different things. The only ones who put any real work into the station are Brad and Sherman! They work hard to get it on the air, and once they do, they work to keep it on the air.

After a while the work starts to take its toll, making both Brad and Sherman frazzled. Brad's father tells Whit that Brad is endangering his health by working so hard. Brad cannot continue. Whit agrees. He goes on the air to praise Brad and Sherman for their commitment and mildly scolds the kids listening for not following through on their promise to help. Whit also announces that everyone interested in keeping Kid's Radio on the air should meet at Whit's End at 3 p.m. the next day. Unfortunately, no one shows. Brad, Sherman, and Whit are disappointed - until the manager of a local station walks in the door. The manager says he loves the show and wants it for his Saturday morning lineup. Brad and Sherman happily agree, having learned firsthand the value of perseverance.

Trivia

• Brad's and Sherman's actors, Donald Long and Joseph Cammaroto, would later play the better-known pair of Jack Davis and Oscar Peterson.
• This episode marks the first appearance of Kids' Radio, although it would not be heard again until #114: “The Big Broadcast”, two years later.
• Brad says that Leonard requested for them to play the theme song from "Texas Chainsaw Mass Attack" which is a parody of the hit horror movie "Texas Chainsaw Massacre."
• Sherman reports that Freddy abandoned the project to watch Mister Ed reruns on TV. Actor Alan Young, who would later play Jack Allen, was the star of this show.
• The Saturday news report features updates on Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev and the policy of Glasnost.
• The musical numbers heard playing on KYDS radio in this episode include "This Is the Day That the Lord Has Made" and "Seek Ye First" — as well as the AIO theme, which plays during Whit's ad for free ice cream.
• Sherman says that he knocked Jeremy Price off his skateboard. Jeremy Price is mentioned again much later in #170: “A Test for Robyn”, when Robyn Jacobs cheated off of him on a History test.
• Near the end of the show, Whit alludes to starting a radio program, only what he's describing is Adventures in Odyssey! The ironic part — the radio man he describes it to thinks the idea is ridiculous! This is similar to the scene in #440: “I Slap Floor”, when Whit suggests the idea of the Strata-Flyer and people think he's crazy.

• This episode was originally titled KYDS Radio, which is how the radio station is spelled.

• When Sherman says to Whit that five of the tubes work, three break, equaling two. But Sherman says that only one works now.
