Bubble hats, hot dog cars...what will Ed Washington think of next? Tamika just doesn't seem to connect with her father anymore, and when her mom can't go with her to the parent/student awards banquet at school, Tamika dreads having to go with her dad. It seems like her dad is always embarrassing her!

Ed senses the distance between himself and his daughter as well, but he refuses to believe he's losing his little girl. He decides to take the day off and spend some father/daughter time and do all Tamika's favorite things. Unfortunately, her favorite things when she was younger don't match her favorite things now. Tamika is devastated to find that her father has pulled strings to get exclusive use of the hot dog car for the day. Oblivious to her embarrassment, Ed moves right along to the next activity of the day...swimming. Although she does admit that her father is the belly-flop king, Tamika is embarrassed and she is anxious to leave.

When the school banquet finally rolls around, Tamika is sure she isn't going to have a good time. They meet Gwen Kablonski and her father at the banquet, and the two fathers embarrass their daughters together. Somehow, though, Gwen doesn't seem to mind. Tamika is upset, and Ed decides to wait in the car so he doesn't embarrass her anymore. While he's gone, Gwen tells Tamika about how important her dad is to her, especially now that her mom has passed away. She knows that he loves her a great deal, and even though he is embarrassing, she loves him too.

On the way home from the banquet, Ed and Tamika are finally able to talk about how they've been feeling. Ed comes to terms with the fact that his little girl is growing up, and Tamika learns just how much her dad really does love her and how important it is to honor your parents.

Discussion Questions

1. Read Exodus 20:12 for God's instructions about honoring parents. What did Tamika say in this episode that showed disrespect toward her father?

2. How could Ed have been more sensitive to his daughter? Once he realized that Tamika's feelings about goofy things had changed, what did he do to respect that?

3. Tamika's trouble began by judging her dad based on what she thought her friends were thinking. How can worrying about people's opinions skew the way we respect others?
