Plot

Harlow-doyle-private-eye.png

There is a new private detective in town. His name is Harlow Doyle, and his motto is, “No case too big, too small, or too unusual.” And it’s a good thing. Soon after visiting Whit’s End and meeting Whit, Harlow gets hired by Jessie Morales to find something she’s lost, her faith!

Whit isn’t sure about this, but before he can say anything, Harlow takes off to examine every aspect of Jessie’s life. What he finds is revealing: First of all, Jessie has been spending Sunday afternoons at the local bookstore, browsing through teen magazines, hardly uplifting reading material. Second, the local soccer league has started playing their games on Sunday mornings, causing Jessie to miss church. Third, Jessie’s Bible school teacher, Dale Jacobs, has been giving boring lessons. Finally, Jessie’s parents haven’t been as diligent as they should in making sure she attends church and her Wednesday night evangelism class.

Harlow puts all the facts together and deduces that the culprit responsible for taking Jessie’s faith is...Maybe it’s better not to say. But the lesson that Jessie learns about faith as being a matter of obedience and discipline is one that applies to all of us.

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Notes

Trivia
  • The producers wanted to bring back the wackiness of Officer David Harley. Harlow Doyle, PI, was the answer, thanks to the vocal characterization and performance of Will Ryan, who played both Doyle and Harley.
  • This episode is the only episode in which we hear "Miss Turner" that Harlow refers to all the time. Actress Pamela Hayden later voiced Katrina.
  • Harlow Doyle's last name is a reference to Hoyle playing cards.
  • In the episode, Whit seems to have a feeling that he has met Harlow Doyle before. This may have been an attempt to imply that Officer David Harley and Harlow Doyle are either the same person, or just a quick way for the writers to go past the fact that the two characters are very much the same.
  • This is Jessie Morales' last episode, though she is mentioned later in #222: “The Jesus Cloth”.
  • Eugene compares Doyle's look to that of vintage American actor Humphrey Bogart, who was known for portraying tough private detectives in classic films.
  • This episode was used in Radio Scripts, Volume 1.
Goofs
  • At the end of the conversation between Bart Rathbone and Harlow Doyle at the soccer game, Bart calls a timeout. This is impossible: there are no timeouts in soccer.

Quotes

Harlow Doyle: Jumpin' whale gills Miss Turner, you better call the police!

Eugene Meltsner: Do you think he's trying a Humphrey Bogart image?
John Whittaker: Not with a coon-skin cap!

Mrs. Morales: She once went to the lost and found to find her innocence. She gets it from her father’s side.

Harlow Doyle: What did she say?
Bart Rathbone: ARE YOU NUTS?! THE OTHER WAY!! THE OTHER WAY!!
Harlow Doyle: You let her talk to you like that?
Bart Rathbone: Huh?

Harlow Doyle: It'll take a bigger fish than that to get up early enough to catch me!

Harlow Doyle: Can I have another cookie?
Dale Jacobs: No.
Harlow Doyle: Oh.
