1 Samuel 16:1-13

1The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king."

2But Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me." The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.' 3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate." 4Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, "Do you come in peace?" 5Samuel replied, "Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the LORD." 7But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 8Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, "The LORD has not chosen this one either." 9Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, "Nor has the LORD chosen this one." 10Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these." 11So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." 12So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one."

13So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.

Camp What-A-Nut, Part 2

“Camp What-A-Nut, Part 2” is episode #38 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Phil Lollar, and originally aired on August 6, 1988.

Summary

Donny McCoy gives his account of what happened at Camp What-A-Nut. He describes his encounter with a bear, and the rest of the camp's encounter with a skunk.

Plot

Camp-what-a-nut.png

Donny McCoy helps Whit to his feet, and they both climb a nearby tree. The bear starts up after them, but she's too heavy to get far, so she tries shaking them down from the tree. Donny and Whit hang on tight, feverishly praying to God for safety.

Meanwhile, back at camp, Chas has discovered a way to get even with Marco — by luring a skunk into his cabin with a trail of popcorn. But the skunk escapes and follows Chas to the mess hall, causing a panic. Everyone clears the room but Chas, whom the frightened skunk blesses with a special present — his spray.

Later, Ned, who has received Gloria's necklace via Chas, meets up with Gloria and discovers that she made the necklace for a different fellow, not him.

Ned's worries are over, but Whit and Donny's are just starting. The bear finally leaves, but when Whit and Donny try to return to the camp, they get lost. Nighttime is coming fast, and they have to do something. Suddenly, Donny gets an idea: He'll climb a tree all the way to the top to see if he can spot the camp. His smallness works in his favor, and once at the top, he quickly sees both the camp and the route back. The two of them make their way back, and Donny has quite a tale to tell his journal — and everyone else — about how the thing he always disliked about himself ended up saving his and Whit's lives.

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. Why did Chas treat Marco — and everyone else — so badly?
  2. Read 1 Samuel 16:1-7. Why does God think what's on the inside is more important than what's on the outside?
    • How can you become better at seeing people's hearts rather than their appearances?

Cast

Notes

Trivia
Goofs
  • At the beginning of this episode, Whit tells Donnie to run from the bear. You should never run from a bear: it is faster than you, and running away will make it even angrier.

Quotes

Marco Dibiasi: N.L + G.M. Oh, those are nice initi'.
Ned Lewis: Those are my initi'!

Ned Lewis: Well, she told me when she was making this that it was something for her true love!
Marco Dibiasi: Eh! That's a'wonderful! Congratulations!
Ned Lewis: No! It's not a'wonderful!

John Whittaker: Well, we'll just have to sit up here until she gets either tired or bored and goes away, but until then I'd suggest we do two things.
Donny McCoy: What?
John Whittaker: Well, the first is to keep praying.
Donny McCoy: I've been doing that. What's the second?
John Whittaker: Whoah! Hold on tight!

Marco Dibiasi: You know what my poppa used to say, "Marco, if you're gonna go out for revenge, you'd better dig two graves."
