Kidsboro, Part 3
“Kidsboro, Part 3” is episode #645 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on June 7, 2008.
Summary
Mr. Whittaker creates a whole town run entirely by kids. Ryan and his friends decide that they must run the town right by establishing their own government, laws, and justice system.
Plot
Mayor Ryan Cummings says that he’s installing cameras to keep the residents of Kidsboro safe. But Jill Segler uses her investigative reporting skills to find out what’s really going on.
- This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »
Discussion Questions
- God invented nations and what we call “the state” or the government. What is the purpose of the government? (See Romans 13:1-4.)
- In order to punish evil, a government must have laws. Where should people look for guidance when creating laws?
- Did America’s Founding Fathers use the Bible to establish laws?
- What does it mean to have liberty?
- Would we experience more liberty if we didn’t have to obey any laws?
- Ryan and Nelson were in the government of Kidsboro, but they found themselves in difficult situations—even doing the wrong things for what they hoped were good reasons. Is it ever right to do wrong, even if you mean well?
- What happens when a government behaves that way?
- What are the consequences when a government drifts away from the principles found in the Bible?
- Do you see that happening with your government?
- How?
- Should the government decide what schools teach?
- Should the government take care of the poor, or is that someone else’s responsibility?
- Is it the government’s job to decide if parents are being good parents?
- What do you think happens when a government becomes all-powerful?

Notes
- The scandal and cover up which forced Ryan and Nelson to resign could be considered a metaphor for the Watergate conspiracy and coverup.
- Essentially Kidsboro was either without a mayor after Ryan resigned and before the election or an interim mayor was in charge.
- Trivia
- This episode is available in the Official Podcast.
- This was the last episode to air on the radio that featured Paul Herlinger as John Whittaker.
- Goofs
- Supposedly there were three minutes of missing audio tape from Ryan and Nelson's conversation. However their conversation took place before the cover conversation so theoretically there should have been a full hour after the alarm clock rang. This discrepancy has not been explained.

Ryan Cummings: So, let me get this straight: Our national flower can't die, and our national bird is already dead?
