A Call for Reverend Jimmy

“A Call for Reverend Jimmy” is episode #289 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on November 19, 1994.

Summary

Donna Barclay is annoyed to find herself a source for sermon illustrations, and her brother, Jimmy, wonders if God may be calling him to the ministry.

Plot

After one of George Barclay’s sermons one Sunday morning, one of the church members plants the idea in Jimmy’s head that he should become a pastor. Jimmy is intrigued by the idea. When his father asks him to teach a Sunday school class, and Lawrence Hodges tells him he handled a crisis with Donna just like his father would, Jimmy begins to take the idea seriously.

Meanwhile, Donna is getting mad. Her dad keeps using stories about her in his sermons. The stories are humorous and good illustrations, but they are embarrassing to Donna — especially one where George describes how Donna made goo-goo eyes at a boy during an awards ceremony the family attended for Jimmy. Donna is irate.

Jimmy joins Donna’s foul mood when his Sunday school teaching experience is terrible. He is so boring that the kids practically walk out on him during the class.

Later, George and Mary counsel their children. Jimmy realizes that he doesn’t really want to be a preacher, and George apologizes to Donna for using her so often as a sermon illustration. He promises to ask permission before he tells stories about her in the future. It’s not easy being a preacher’s kid.

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Jimmy Barclay: Great! Now what do you want me to do, Lawrence?
Lawrence Hodges: I think you should wear a bow tie.
Jimmy Barclay: I'll look like my dad. He's a pastor.
