Summary

Eugene and Katrina deal with the changes that come with a new addition to the house. Whit’s conflict with the “Let’s Get Together Festival” intensifies as his shop is vandalized. Plot

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. Why were some kids jealous of Buck? What kinds of homes did they come from?
  2. Who do you think vandalized Whit’s End and why? Why is Whit reluctant to accuse anyone or jump to conclusions?
  3. Jason told Whit that “people are getting militant about their opinions, and they’re more than happy to trounce those who get in their way.” Can you share something you’ve seen like that in the world? What opinions are people getting “militant” about?
  4. Whit said, “I’ve never been afraid to stand up for what I believe.” Have you ever been afraid to stand up? Why?

  • Wooton's reference to the "Generic Fan in the Expendable Red Shirt" is a reference to the famously expendable crewmembers on Star Trek who wore red shirts.
  • Wally refers to Jay as Sherlock.

Quotes

Katrina Meltsner: Did Mr. Skint visit you?
Buck Oliver: I'd rather not talk about him...if you don't mind.

Jay Smouse: How was I to know your junk was organized? I mean, it's junk.

Wally Haggler: I think it's time for you to go home.
Jay Smouse: But what about Hangman's Hollow?
Wally Haggler: Go home!
Jay Smouse: <sputtering> No- really- but I...
Wally Haggler: Seriously, Jay; your mother's calling you for dinner.
Jay Smouse: No, she isn't! <phone rings>
Wally Haggler: You were saying?
Jay Smouse: <gasps> Now that's just creepy...

Wooton Bassett: Thanks for stopping by, generic fan person in the expendable red shirt!

Jason Whittaker: It's an area we used to tell stories about—you know, ghosts and monsters and those kinds of things? I'm sure you and your friends have a place like that.
Jay Smouse: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, but we call it the school lunchroom.

Penny Wise: Maybe we should help [Hadley].
Wooton Bassett: <wearily> Why? It sounds like he's breaking everything just fine on his own.

Jason Whittaker: Dad, I wish you'd told me about your argument with Miss Adelaide.
John Whittaker: Oh, it wasn't an argument.
Jason Whittaker: Yeah, well, it wasn't a hug-fest, either!
