Matthew 2:1-15
2and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." 3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5"In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: 6"'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'" 7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." 9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. 13When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." 14So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
15where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."“The Star, Part 1” is episode #176 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Phil Lollar and Paul McCusker, and originally aired on December 14, 1991.
Summary
Connie and Eugene take another Christmas trip in the Imagination Station to meet King Herod, three wise men, and the baby Jesus.
Plot
Connie and Eugene take a voyage in the Imagination Station to ancient Judea to see the baby Jesus. But once there, they get separated. Eugene finds himself in the desert with three strange travelers who are known as the Magi, and Connie ends up with a kind man named Proclus, who takes her to Jerusalem.
There, she meets Mary, Joseph, and the Holy Child. What Connie doesn’t know is that Proclus is a Roman soldier who works for wicked King Herod! Proclus tells Herod that the Messiah may be a child. Just as Mary and Joseph are about to leave the temple, Herod calls Mary over to him and takes Jesus from her! Fortunately, Herod returns Jesus to His parents, proclaiming there is no Messiah.

Discussion Questions
- Connie seemed overwhelmed by the baby Jesus. Why do you think she felt that way?
- Why did the wise men travel such a long distance? Some people would say their journey was crazy. What do you think?

Notes
- Trivia
- Actor Kenneth Mars makes his AIO acting debut in this episode. He would go on to play the recurring character Mr. Holstein, as well as many other minor roles.
- The wraparound to this episode features a Christmas version of the Odyssey theme.
- The "zealot" that the innkeeper Benjamin refers to is the character Judah from the Back to Bethlehem 3-parter from the previous year.
- Interesting to note is that an entire scene is played out in this episode among Connie, Proclus and Benjamin in the stable where Jesus was born the previous year, complete with background animal noises.
- These episodes were made into an AIO Activity Pack: The Star, Volume #10
Goofs
- Proclus says that the temple is nothing compared to the Colosseum in Rome. The story is taking place sometime between 4BC and 2BC or there about, during the reign of Caesar Augustus (whose reign was from 27BC to 14AD). But the Colosseum was not even ordered to be built until the reign of Vespasian, whose reign was from 69 to 79 AD.

Quotes
Gaspar: My name is Gaspar.
Eugene Meltsner: And I am Eugenius, the thirsty.
Proclus: I am Proclus the commander of the Roman Garrison.
King Herod: Yes, yes I know who you are. Welcome. But I was referring to the vision of loveliness standing behind you.
Proclus: This is Connie.
Eugene Meltsner: Water. I'm so thirsty. No, that's the one thing I mustn't think about. I'll think about something else. Food, yeah that's it. I'm not thirsty, I'm hungry – for a big plate of water!
Gaspar: They say talking to yourself is a sure sign you've been in the desert too long.
Eugene Meltsner: Huh? Oh, hello. Yes, I suppose that could be true although when there is no one else to talk to one's own self does present a willing and captive audience.
