The Letter

A Different Kind of Peer Pressure

“The Letter” is episode #8 of the Family Portraits audio series. It was written and directed by Steve Harris, and originally aired on March 9, 1987.

Summary

After her father embarrasses her in front of a friend, Stacey refuses to speak to him. Her mother intervenes and tries to prove to her how much her father actually loves her.

Plot

Stacey is on the phone. She wants to go to the mall with her friend, Linda, and she needs her parents' permission. Her father, Stan, offers to take her in his truck, but Stacey turns it down, mentioning her friends seeing him driving the truck. The father, thinking that she's ashamed of him, takes the phone and says that Stacey will see Linda on Monday, humiliating his daughter. She goes to her room, thinking that her father doesn't love her very much. Stacey's mother soon comes to her room and shows her a letter that her father wrote when Stacey was 1 year old. It was very, very nice, It showed his love for Stacey and it didn't sound like him at all. Stacey makes a letter for her father apologizing for what she said, and showing her love for him. After seeing the letter, her Dad offers to take his truck to a restaurant where none of her friends go to. A father-daughter reunion.

• This is the only Family Portraits episode not to feature either primary actor Hal Smith (as Whit) or recurring actors Walker Edmiston (as Tom Riley) or Bob Luttrell (as Jimmy).
• The actors who played Stacey and her father in this episode (Katie Leigh and Alan Bergman) would later return as Connie Kendall and her father, Bill Kendall, respectively.
