Romans 12:2
“A Different Kind of Peer Pressure” is episode #9 of the Family Portraits audio series. It was written and directed by Steve Harris, and originally aired on March 16, 1987.
Summary
The Hudson family is having trouble with peer pressure. The daughter, Blair Hudson, decides to not be friends with a guy who is not considered 'in', and her father, Richard Hudson, puts down a co-worker to fit in.
Plot
The Hudson family — Richard, Ruth, and 14-year-old Blair — are shopping at Odyssey Mall. The tension is thick between Blair and Richard. It escalates into a full-blown argument when they run into Mickey, a childhood friend of Blair’s. Blair treats Mickey like he has some sort of disease, and he leaves quickly. Blair excuses her rudeness by telling her parents that the gang at school decided Mickey is “out.” Richard finds Blair’s behavior inexcusable, and he grounds her for three weeks.
But Richard learns that peer pressure isn’t just for the young. The next day at work, he puts down Jerry, a friend and co-worker, just because Jerry doesn’t fit the corporate image. Jerry finds out about Richard’s betrayal and blasts him for it, then quits.
Richard feels guilty and goes to Whit for advice. Whit tells him that some prayer is in order, then strongly suggests that Richard and Blair patch things up with Jerry and Mickey. Richard agrees, thanks Whit, and goes home. He asks Ruth if they have any plans after church that Sunday.
Ruth says, “No, why?”
“Well,” says Richard, “there are a couple of people I’d like to invite over for dinner...”

Notes
- Trivia
- Certain elements of this episode copied into a far later episode, #348: “With a Little Help from My Friends”, including Blair's name as the one who gives into peer pressure, the situation of the father at work (later applied to Connie's mother), "Conformists Anonymous" which was changed to "Peer Pressure Anonymous."
- In the opening wraparound of this episode, Dr. Dobson and Mike Trout talk about some of the negative mail they have gotten about the Family Portraits series. One letter did not like inclusion of the teen/parent arguments in the program and another thought the programs sounded like they were from the 1950s.
Quotes
Mickey Barton: My name is 'Mick.' Mickey sounds kinda — you know, immature.
Richard Hudson: You are grounded, and I mean grounded! No phone, no nothing!
