Treasure Hunt

“Treasure Hunt” is episode #198 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on July 11, 1992.

Summary

Things get out of control when Isaac and Eugene join in a charitable treasure hunt that also include some very realistic-looking water pistols.

Plot

The crowds are gathering at McAlister Park for the big Treasure Hunt and War Games Contest sponsored by the Electric Palace and Odyssey 105 FM. Bryan Dern is excitedly reporting on the competition as teams of two players’ race all over town to find the secret treasure. It seems as if everyone in town is participating, except for Whit and Tom. They want nothing to do with one of Bart Rathbone’s schemes. At Tom’s barn, while listening to Dern on the radio, they also hear that the infamous Hank Murray, who tried to rob Connie and Eugene at Whit’s End, (see #169: “Hold Up!”), has escaped from Campbell County Jail. Whit wonders if Murray would be so bold as to come back to Odyssey. Sure enough, he does return. Murray shows up at the barn and takes Tom and Whit hostage!

Meanwhile, the unlikely team of Isaac Morton and Eugene are doing well in the contest. But things get complicated when Isaac and Eugene disagree over a set of clues. Isaac ends up at Tom’s barn, where he is also promptly taken hostage by Hank Murray. This leaves Eugene as their only hope for rescue!

Things look dim, until Eugene bursts into the barn just as Hank Murray is about to escape on one of Tom’s horses. Eugene stops Hank by blowing a special whistle, spooking Rachel! Murray is thrown from the horse, and Eugene disarms him. Eugene has saved the day, and everyone learns a lesson about God’s protection.

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. Why didn’t Whit want to take part in the contest even though it was for a good cause?
  2. Did Whit and Tom handle the situation with Hank Murray correctly?
    • What about Isaac and Eugene?
  3. Why did Eugene get so carried away with his squirt gun?

Trivia
  • This show originally aired with the title "War Games," but it was changed after audience concerns about violence and weapons.
  • An interesting aspect of this episode is how the first 10 minutes, 30 seconds (up to the first commercial break) are one "scene" that doesn't cut away. The perspective begins with Bryan Dern and Bart Rathbone, cuts through the radio to Whit and Tom, cuts back through the radio to Dern, stays with Eugene and Isaac Morton, moves back to Dern, and finally cuts through the radio to stay with Tom and Whit.
  • Nearly hidden dialogue:
Radio Newscaster...- He is a tall, sandy-haired gentleman who is on foot and smells like dirty clothes. Call the police immediately if you suspect you've seen this man. (BEAT) In other news, the President announced today the formation of a new Congressional committee to monitor the ethical practices of the Ethics Committee. (BEAT) In Sports, the Falcons lined their nest with the Woodchucks by beating them 7-3. (BEAT) Odyssey 105 weather-cast will see sunny skies until evening when it will become dark — perfect for the big contest downtown! Now this...

Reviews

Quotes

Isaac Morton: I have an idea! No, I don't.

Eugene Meltsner: Everybody freeze! To borrow the colloquialism.

John Whittaker: What's gotten into him?
Isaac Morton: It's the water pistol. All of a sudden he thinks he's Rambo.
Tom Riley: I've always worried about that boy, Whit.

Tom Riley: They just don't make tools like they used to.
John Whittaker: Well, they do, but they're more expensive now!

Eugene Meltsner: What's the next clue, Isaac?
Isaac Morton: "Finding the next clue shouldn't be torture; it may be the apple of your eye. Under a bushel or in the orchard. All you have to do is try" ...What do you think?
Eugene Meltsner: Whoever wrote that needs to take a course in poetry.
Isaac Morton: The clue!

Hank Murray: This place is a looney bin!

Bart Rathbone: Well, Brad — can I call ya "Brad"?
Bryan Dern: Sure, but my name's Bryan.
