Modesty is the Best Policy

“Modesty is the Best Policy” is episode #192 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on April 25, 1992.

Summary

Donna Barclay wants to wear an outfit to a school banquet that her father thinks is immodest.

Plot

George Barclay is trying to talk to Donna as she is getting ready for a party. As usual, George walks into Donna’s room without knocking because her stereo was on too loud, and she didn't hear him knock. As a result, he is met with shrieks and howls of protest: Donna isn’t dressed yet. George is confused by this turn of events and asks Mary about it. Mary tells him that Donna is getting older. She also thinks that it might be because she got a new dress and might want to surprise him with her new outfit. From now on, George will have to expect this sort of behavior. George reluctantly agrees.

Just then, Donna comes downstairs wearing a new, revealing dress. George absolutely forbids Donna to go out like that, but Donna says all the girls are wearing dresses like this. Finally, Mary strikes a compromise: Donna can wear the dress as long as she also keeps on the jacket that came with it. Donna reluctantly agrees and heads off to the party.

Once there, she grumbles and complains to Jack Davis that her parents aren’t fair. Donna is standing there sweating in her jacket, while everyone else is wearing what they want. She finally gets so upset (and overly warm), she removes her jacket. Immediately, she gets reactions from the guys at the party.

Donna likes those reactions, until she learns throughout the next week at school that her reputation as a nice girl is suffering. Suddenly, rumors are spreading that Donna is not as pure as she lets people think. Shannon even nearly challenges her to a fight — she thinks Donna is using her slinky little dresses to steal Shannon’s boyfriend. Finally, Donna realizes that things may have gone too far — and that modesty is the best policy after all.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why didn’t George want Donna to go out the way she was dressed?
  2. How much do you think your modesty (or lack of it) determines your reputation?
  3. Why is it so important to be modest?
    • How does God feel about it?

Quotes

George Barclay: It all started in Donna's room when I couldn't get her attention because she had her stereo on.
Donna Barclay: Right, so you walked in.
George Barclay: Who's telling this story?
Donna Barclay: We both are!

Donna Barclay: I hadn't finished doing my hair. I wanted you to see the whole outfit.
George Barclay: Well I'd like to see the whole outfit too, Donna. I mean, I see you, but not the outfit.

Donna Barclay: My Dad said he's got to get used to me growing up. How's he going to get used to it unless I start dressing grown up?
Jack Davis: <Under breath> Or acting grown up.

Jack Davis: You're dressing like the kind of girls they wanna go out with, but they don't really respect.

Donna Barclay: I'm not sure why I told him. Probably for the same reason we always tell him: we trust him.

George Barclay: Tell me, Jack, honestly. What did you think of [Donna's dress]?
Jack Davis:
Honestly?
George Barclay:
Uh, huh.
Jack Davis:
Well, I like it a lot, but...
Both:
For all the wrong reasons.
