Ice Fishing

Plot

It's not easy living with a super-intelligent sister, as Monty Whittaker-Dowd knows. Jenny has done everything during her visit to Odyssey. She has played the violin in the Children's Orchestra, been in a church play, and built a model of a Southern Pacific Railroad passenger car - and she's done it all with excellence. Monty, on the other hand, can barely manage to keep himself out of trouble. Whit notices this, and when Tom Riley decides to take Eugene on an ice-fishing expedition to broaden his horizons, Whit decides to join them and take Monty, figuring the trip might do Monty some good as well.

The foursome heads off for the wilderness, though Eugene, much to Tom's frustration, manages to bring along many of the comforts of civilization. Meanwhile, Whit has a wonderful bonding time with Monty, convincing him that just because Jenny is special doesn't mean that Monty isn't special, too. In fact, Whit says, even though there are billions of people in the world, no two are exactly alike. God loves each one of us. All we have to be is who He's made us to be.

The trip is a success. Everyone ends up having a good time, and Monty and Tom learn that if there is anything about us that needs changing, we should let God do it. At least Monty does.

Reviews

Quotes

Tom Riley: Eugene, it is not an environmental expedition. It's a fishin' trip. A fishin trip.
Eugene Meltsner: But Mr. Riley, I don't see anything wrong with studying the cold-blooded vertebrate in its natural habitat as long as we're already there!

Tom Riley: I have said it before and I will say it again. Sometimes I just wonder 'bout that boy!

Eugene Meltsner: <after lighting a fire with a blowtorch> Who wants hot cocoa?
Tom Riley: I'll be in my tent.

Tom Riley: Make room! Make room!
John Whittaker: Well, hi, Tom! What are you doing?
Tom Riley: Well, I come to see if I can catch any fish. My fishing spot's deader than, uh, a dead thing that's dead.

Tom Riley: It's not right for Eugene to be so... so... Eugene-like!

Monty Whittaker: Hi Mr. Riley, hi Eugene.
Tom Riley: Well, hello there Monty.
Eugene Meltsner: A most felicitous morning to you, Montgomery.
Monty Whittaker: Huh? Oh, Thanks.

Tom Riley: Eugene, did you hear the way Whit and I spoke to each other when he came in?
Eugene Meltsner: Absolutely.
Tom Riley: Well, that's the way you're supposed to say hello. No fancy shmancy words, just a nice simple howdy-do, or hi or hello. Understand?

Eugene Meltsner: Very well, Hello Guinevere.
Jenny Whittaker-Dowd: A most felicitous morning to you, Eugene.
Tom Riley: Huh? Hold it, hold it now, Jenny. Did he tell you to say that?
