Henry Ross was a slave sometime before the Civil War living in the American South. Sometime after his son William was sold to a plantation further down south, Henry and his wife Caroline made a break for a town called Cabin Creek which was a sort of sanctuary city for slaves. However, once the Fugitive Slave Act was passed they traveled the Underground Railroad to the church that would become Whit's End. After Caroline died of pneumonia Henry left and was recaptured. He was later released and reunited with William and the two fled to Canada.
