The Perfect Church, Part 1

“The Perfect Church, Part 1” is episode #715 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Paul McCusker and Marshal Younger, and originally aired on October 6, 2012.

Summary

After Matthew sees the problems and conflicts at his own church, Whit sends him on an Imagination Station adventure to witness the very first church in the book of Acts.

Plot

Matthew Parker is at Whit's End receiving his chocolate milkshake from Whit. Matthew explains that lately he hasn't enjoyed church as much as he used to. He feels that his church isn't united like it expresses in the Bible. He wishes that his church could be as perfect as it was back then. Whit suggests that he take an adventure in the Imagination Station back to the days of the early church to give him an idea of how things were in the church.

Matthew agrees and enters the Imagination Station. He walks through the door under the flashing red light and the adventure begins. Matthew is taken to Jerusalem. He lands in a chicken coop and is discovered by an angry man who thinks Matthew is a chicken thief. Ananias yells for his wife Sapphira. She tells him that Seth and his family have arrived to look at the field. Ananias reluctantly goes inside with Seth and leave Matthew with the ladies. Matthew explains to Debra and Rhoda that he's not a thief. He finds out from them that he's in Jerusalem. They learn that he's a believer and get excited, especially since he's a Gentile. They agree to take Matthew to the apostles.

Matthew washes up with Rhoda, and Rhoda is amazed to hear that Matthew is a Gentile believer. Matthew leaves Ananias' house with Seth, Rhoda and Debra. They want to take him to Peter to talk about his faith and how he came to it. They also hope to help him find his family.

The four of them enter the marketplace and head to Peter's house. On the way, they run into an excited crowd. Seth spots Stephen and asks him what is going on. Stephen tells them that he and the other apostles were sitting in a room and it was like a fire from heaven swept over them. He said that they began speaking in languages that they never learned. Matthew recognizes Stephen's experience as Pentecost. Stephen finishes and continues running through telling others. They see Peter talking to the crowd and get close enough to hear what Peter is saying. Seth is getting excited and overwhelmed by all this new information that the spirit of God is now available for everyone.

Matthew goes through a door and is taken to a few days later. He finds Rhoda again and she has him follow her to the Portico of Solomon. As they get closer, they find a lame man that asks them to carry him to the gate. They help him get closer to the gate, and they see Peter and John approaching. The lame man asks them for money but instead Pete says "Silver nor gold I do not have. But what I have, I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." At the command, the man grabs Peter's hand and begins walking. He begins shouting in the street and praising God. Rhoda and Matthew turn to go, and see a Sadducee approaching. The Sadducee orders for Peter and John to be arrested.

Rhoda and Matthew go to her house to tell her parents about Peter and John, but news has already reached them. Seth and Debra tell Rhoda that they must sell their property in order to help others. Rhoda protests but they insist that it's the best thing to do.

Matthew heads to the courtyard and is taken to a couple days later to a secret meeting place. In it, he meets up with Rhoda again. Moments later, Seth and Ananias joins them. Seth tells him he plans to sell the land again, and give the money over to the church. Ananias seems to like this idea, and suggests that he'll do the same, but states that he won't give all of it. Ananias seems to be focused on power, and Seth tries to get him to understand, but Ananias leaves before Seth can say much more. Matthew is surprised that there is conflict among the believers. Seth explains that following Jesus doesn't always stop the arguments among them. Matthew doesn't completely understand. Seth says maybe they can talk about it more later. Matthew goes to get some water from the well and meets a man who starts asking a lot of questions. The man introduces himself as Saul and instructs Matthew to keep quiet. Matthew tries to get help and winds up falling into the well.
