Galatians 6:7-8

7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

Stars in Our Eyes

“Stars in Our Eyes” is episode #551 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Kathy Buchanan and Nathan Hoobler (among others), and originally aired on October 23, 2004.

Summary

Whit, Connie, Wooton Bassett and Tom Riley write a TV commercial to tell the benefits of Whit's End.

Plot

Wooton enters Whit's End, despondent as he tries to figure out how Power Boy can possibly extricate himself from the situation he was left in at the end of the last issue. While discussing this, Whit comes downstairs and tells Wooton, Connie, and Tom that his old friend David Holcomb wants to produce a commercial for Whit's End!

Everyone has an idea for what the commercial should be about - first, Wooton comes up with a commercial that has nothing to do with Whit's End, then Connie comes up with a big upbeat commercial, Tom Riley comes up with a calm, homespun commercial, and Bart Rathbone comes up with a commercial that actually promotes the Electric Palace. Whit suggests that everyone puts their ideas together.

Meanwhile, Tamika is working on a paper that describes her hero. She chooses her favorite movie star: Sydney Sellica. Whit helps her define what a hero is and actually allows her to have a phone conversation with the star herself! Tamika learns an important lesson on what a true hero is.

In the end the commercial comes together as a combination of everyone's ideas and everyone learns a lesson on what really makes someone a hero.

This plot section is too short and should be expanded. »

Discussion Questions

  1. Why didn't Davey like the gang's idea for a commercial?

Reviews

Quotes

Sydney Sellica: I love that my movies appeal to everyone — even people who are poor or still wear tie-dye!

Sydney Sellica: I stand against smoking. Never start smoking, Tamika. Smoking kills, and if you're killed you've lost a very important part of your life!

Davey Holcomb: If this is the commercial you want I'll be happy to do it. It's just that when I think about Whit's End, I think about the people. All of you taught me so much — especially you, Whit. I remember coming in here feeling like a total failure in life. But once I started talking with you, creating inventions and everything. I started believing in myself. And more importantly, I started believing in what God could do with me. That's what gave me the confidence to do what I love and try new things. That's probably why I ended up opening my own company. Because the people at Whit's End gave me something that lasted longer than an ice cream cone.

Connie Kendall: So why might you be depressed?
Wooton Bassett: Well, I just finished the latest issue of Powerboy and it was the one where he finally faced the three-eyed fish monster but it ended with him strapped in Dr. Ichobodia's torture chair and his power suit was disabled and he had no way to contact headquarters. I don't know how he'll ever get out of it.
Connie Kendall: So that's why you're depressed?
Wooton Bassett: Oh my brain hurts just thinking about it.

Connie Kendall: <In Bart's pitch> Ey, this here's where Whit makes his sundaes at a pretty competitive price. Now, don't get yous hopes up, there. They're not like stuperendous prices at the Electric Palace, but come on — can everyone sell blenders for $49.99 plus tax!
