1 John 4:18

18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

“No Way In” is episode #547 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by John Fornof, and originally aired on May 29, 2004.

Summary

Whit's situation worsens while his son Jason searches for him with Marvin's help.

Plot

Jason and Connie are frantic as they continue to look for Whit, when Jason spots Whit's abandoned car. Finding Whit's address book open to the W's, Jason walks to the Washington's new house (formerly the McAlister house). However, the Washington family don't know anything about what happened, and weren't planning on meeting him. Calling Whit's phone again, they discover that Marvin has it upstairs, having found it outside the basement window. Looking through the call list, Jason discovers that Whit called Leon Wankel and tried to get a tow truck. The scene ends with Jason and the Washington's wondering if Whit tried to make it to the Washington's, and if so... what happened to him?

Meanwhile, just before Jason arrived, Elaine and Ed were discussing how the house seemed very strange; Elaine notices that the pictures don't seem to stay straight, and there's a man's footprint that Ed didn't leave. Also on the trail of a mystery, Marvin is investigating the trail of the missing cheese doodles, which seems to lead to the study.

During these events, Whit and Lester converse, and Whit's condition deteriorates so that his broken leg is turning colors, he drifts in and out of consciousness. Lester is afraid to leave and tell people about Whit, since they will see him, and Mrs. Olsen will shoot him. Whit discovers that Lester is afraid of needles, and that Mrs. Olsen was someone giving Lester shots in a hospital. Lester doesn't want Whit, his "friend" to die, since Mr. Al died, but he's afraid to leave the cellar.

Just as Marvin and Tamika discover the trapdoor and the tunnel, Whit passes out, and Lester calls for help.

In the hospital, it seems like all the mysteries are solved; the footprint and crooked pictures in Elaine and Ed's room are from Lester, who also explains the disappearing food and clothes. However, not all is as it seems. That night, Whit remembers that Lester said he never wanted to go upstairs again, Marvin discovers his recording equipment picked up someone walking up the stairs, and in the middle of the night, Marvin and Tamika wake up to discover the plumber Mac is in the house, removing a mirror that covers a wall safe.

Scared and worried, Marvin and Tamika try to wake up their parents, who were drugged by Mac as he "finished working on the plumbing." As they are trying to wake them up, Whit calls, but the phone call is cut off by Mac, who starts to tie them up. At this point, Lester arrives, having snuck out of Jason's house and returned to the Washington's. Marvin and Tamika call for help, but Lester is afraid to go upstairs since Mr. Al died there. In his frustration, Lester repeats his phrase 3-18-99 over and over. Mac realizes this is the combination to the safe, and tells Lester that it's ok, it was a mistake, a stupid mistake.

Determined to show that he is not stupid, Lester overcomes his fear and takes the money from the safe himself, retreating to the tunnel, and trapping Mac by using the trapdoor.

There's a final meeting where it is discovered that Mac is a McAlister looking to get the family money, but that in his last will (also found in the safe) Mr. McAlister left his money and house to Lester. Lester willingly gives the house to the Washington's (who had purchased it from the estate), and Whit tells Lester that his medication is now available in pill form: no more shots!

Discussion Questions

  1. How did Whit treat Lester?
  2. Lester was so afraid that he couldn’t help Whit. Has fear ever kept you from doing the right thing?
  3. Mac the plumber let his desire for money get out of hand. Is there something you’ve ever wanted a lot?
    • How did you meet that desire?

Quotes

Connie Kendall: Who does Whit know that starts with a "W"? Walton, umm Wooton, Whittaker. Oh! Maybe he looked up your number.
Jason Whittaker: Connie, he already knows my number. I live at his house.
Connie Kendall: Right.

Jason Whittaker: Hey Ed, do you think that Dad tried to make it here to your house?
Ed Washington: If he did, he never showed up.

Elaine Washington: Well, back to the fun. I'm unpacking your sock collection.
Ed Washington: Those aren't just socks, Elaine! Those are priceless mementos!

Lester: I'm not stupid.

Officer Stew Burke: Wait a minute. Where's Jason?
John Whittaker: Oh, he had to take a business trip to New Mexico. Last minute thing. He sends his regrets.

Marvin Washington: Lester, what ever happened to the missing jar of pickles? You know; the ones in the pantry?
Lester: Marvin?
Marvin Washington: Yes?
Lester: Three, eighteen, ninety-nine.
Marvin Washington: I knew you were going to say that.
