All Things to All People
Matthew 28:18-20
19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."“All Things to All People” is episode #522 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Bob Hoose, and originally aired on June 21, 2003.
Summary
Seth Young counsels Aubrey Shepard on his radical method of evangelism, which causes Aubrey to question her effectiveness as a Christian.
Plot
Aubrey and Seth are trying out for a play together. After noticing that Aubrey was talking to Sheila, Seth approaches Aubrey to ask what they talked about. Aubrey explains it was just an ordinary conversation and Seth starts to tell her that every conversation should be about God. He says that the only reason he's trying out for the play is to join Nick Mulligan's group. Seth tells Aubrey he’ll teach her how to witness.
Aubrey comes to Seth’s house for the first "lesson." She wants to learn how to better share her faith, but she doesn’t want to lie to try to join a person’s circle of friends. Seth says it’s only a small lie and that he would do anything to bring people to Christ. He bases his logic on the Christian book, "All Things to All People."
Aubrey decides to give Seth’s philosophy a try. She takes Liz to the batting cages so they can act like baseball players. Her assignment from Seth is to tell Nick about Christ. So, being as jock-like as they can, they approach Nick. Unfortunately, they don’t know what to say and annoy him in the process. After several attempts, it still doesn’t work.
Whit explains to Aubrey that it’s better to be herself and to show people who Jesus is and how he connects with who we are. She then comes out and tells Nick what she was trying to tell him all along. He’s not interested. While Aubrey is disappointed, Whit helps her to understand that when you tell someone about Christ, people won’t always make a leap of faith. But, God can use her words to soften someone’s heart.
She realizes this is true when she goes to visit Seth and talks to his mom. She tells his mom that she’s a Christian and his mom is so interested in what that’s all about. She starts asking lots of questions. Aubrey asks if she’s ever talked to Seth about being a Christian and she responds by saying he’s not the spiritual-type and he won’t talk to her about anything. Aubrey comes to realize that letting people genuinely know who she is, is the best way to share about who God is in her life. She encourages Seth to just be himself.

Notes
- Trivia
- This episode's plot is very similar to that of #69: “Go Ye Therefore” and #233: “Thy Will Be Done”, with the same evangelistic book from the former episode being used here.
- Goofs
- In this episode Nick Mulligan refers to Whit by Whit's nickname in front of the kids at Whit's End, contrary to Whit's admonishment that Nick not do this earlier in #431a: “Where There's Smoke”.
- Allusions
- Seth's line in this episode in which he "long[s] for miserable" is an apparent allusion to a quote from the TV show Frasier. In the episode "The Guilt Trippers", Niles Crane says, "I yearn for the days of difficult. Difficult is a picnic. I keep a picture of difficult in a heart shaped frame next to my bed."
Reviews
Quotes
Liz Horton: Man, those move fast! I'm not much of a hitter.
Aubrey Shepard: You don't have to hit. We're not here to have fun. We're here to be Christians.
Liz Horton: You want us to bless the baseballs?
Nick Mulligan: Watch out for that big guy.
Seth Young: Which big guy?
Nick Mulligan: Moose. The big guy. Right there in the backfield.
Seth Young: That's a human?!?!
Nick Mulligan: And be careful. He clips; that's how Frank got his leg broke.
Aubrey Shepard: Do you know where you'd go?
Nick Mulligan: If my pet died? Probably to the toilet to flush him.
Aubrey Shepard: But... wouldn't you want to make sure you both end up in a... happy place?
Nick Mulligan: You callin' the toilet a happy place? That's just flat-out sick, Aubrey.
