Do or Diet
James 1:4
“Do or Diet” is episode #513 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Kathy Buchanan, and originally aired on March 22, 2003.
Summary
Wooton Bassett, Bernard Walton, and Whit go on a diet to help Connie win a scholarship.
Plot
Connie is feeling depressed, wondering what she should do with her life. Then a personal trainer named Ricky McLean convinces Connie that she should try for a scholarship at Campbell County Community College. All she has to do to get the scholarship is get three friends to lose ten pounds in five weeks. Connie immediately turns to Wooton, Whit, and Bernard to help. They are uncertain at first and refuse, but, after seeing how disappointed Connie would be otherwise, they all reluctantly agree to help.
At the first weigh-in Connie hands out diet plans and tells the guys her motto for weight-loss--patience and perseverance. Exercise and dieting begins with mixed results. Whit seems to be doing well, but Bernard and Wooton are having trouble sticking to the diet plan. Bernard convinces Wooton both to cheat when Connie isn’t looking and sneak a bite of a few snacks, and to cut through the hedge when running. The next weigh-in is revealing, however, because Bernard and Wooton aren’t losing enough weight to make the goal in time. Instead of losing four pounds like supposed to, Wooton only lost three, and Bernard not even one pound, although Whit lost six and a half pounds. Connie feels disappointed and wonders if she should quit trying to be a trainer, but Wooton and Bernard tell Connie they will try harder and stick to the motto--patience and perseverance.
It's a difficult time for the next few weeks. Wooton tries removing his eyebrows, cutting his fingernails, trimming his hair, and cleaning out his ears to lose some more weight and Bernard keeps complaining about dieting. Whit seems to be doing the best of the three. Wooton and Bernard stick to their resolve, however, and even refuse to eat a brownie when they have the chance.
The final weigh-in arrives. Wooton lost a total of twelve pounds, more than enough. Bernard lost ten pounds, just enough. And Whit lost... only nine pounds! Connie can’t get the scholarship. Whit feels disappointed that he let Connie down, but Connie shrugs it off, saying that personal training isn’t really for her. She just wants to find something she can be. The three guys remind her of her motto--patience and perseverance. Hang in there, and God will show you the way to go.

Quotes
Bernard Walton: Okay... here it is... chocolate gold.
Wooton Bassett: It’s a little squashed.
Bernard Walton: I was practically running a marathon with it.
Wooton Bassett: Yeah, and it's... it’s sweaty.
Bernard Walton: Yeah, salt adds flavor.
Wooton Bassett: Well, there’s gravel in it.
Bernard Walton: I dropped it once! Or, maybe twice.
Wooton Bassett: Oh, that explains the shoe print.
Connie Kendall: Maybe that's something I should do. I'm pretty health conscious.
Bernard Walton: Oh yeah, she walks all the way to the restroom instead of taking the trolley.
Wooton Bassett: Hoot! Holler! Hoot! Holler!
Connie Kendall: Wooton, what are you doing?
Wooton Bassett: Uh, some not too tragic tragedy has happened!
Ricky McLean: Oh, it has taste beyond what you'd expect!
Bernard Walton: Really good cardboard, then.
Connie Kendall: Maybe he's the answer to my prayer!
Bernard Walton: Well, if he's the answer to your prayer, then I don't even want to know what you've been praying for.
Bernard Walton: Yeah, well, Maude calls them cuddle bundles.
Connie Kendall: Wow! That sounds like something I might like to do!
Ricky McLean: Oh Connie! Y-E-S you could! Y-O-U could do it!
Bernard Walton: I-T.
Connie Kendall: Fruits and vegetables, remember?
Wooton Bassett: Oh, Connie, I had a cherry on my hot fudge sundae! FRUIT!
Connie Kendall: You did it, Bernard! You ran two miles! How do you feel?
Bernard Walton: I'd have to get better to die.
