Plot

Bernard is in Whit's End, when Mandy and David walk in. Bernard asks Mandy and David if they knew about the strange week in Odyssey. They reply no, and Bernard tells them about it. In the story, Richard Maxwell returns to town and gets jobs at various places in town, from the Timothy Center to the Electric Palace. At the same time, people begin acting strangely: Eugene and Connie prepare to get married, Edwin becomes engaged to a now very domestic Margaret Faye, and Harlow Doyle actually solves a case. Bernard got everyone together and they tried to hash out why everyone was acting so strangely. The only connection was revealed to be Richard, who then revealed himself to be Regis Blackgaard, and claimed to have always been Blackgaard. Bernard then told how, satisfied to hide under the disguise of Richard, Regis left the country and the doctors got everyone back to normal. Then Whit walks in, and David and Mandy ask him why he didn't tell them about the week. Whit just smiles and says, "Don't believe everything you hear."

Quotes

Edwin Blackgaard: Would any of you care to join Margaret and me tonight? We're dining on cheeseburgers and then... then we're going to see that new action-adventure movie with lots of explosions and automobile chases... hoo hoo! Looks exquisite!

Harlow Doyle: Great Monroe Doctrine of 1823! So that's what killed the dinosaurs!

Harlow Doyle: And we all know I've never been this lucid and deductive before!
Everyone: That's for sure!

Connie Kendall: Oh, Eugene, your words just slide off your tongue like poetry.
Eugene Meltsner: You mean, mellifluously?
Connie Kendall: I think so.

John Whittaker: There is nothing wrong with my advice.
Sarah: Mr. Whittaker, look! I pierced my own ears, just like you said.
John Whittaker: Oh, very good, Sarah! Your parents will be so proud.

John Whittaker: Well, I-I'll prove it to you. Here — look at this, I came up with a new invention today. It's a flying machine, made out of a boat with oars. And big helium balloons. And a propeller! We can use it to rescue people!
Connie Kendall: Uh-huh.
Tom Riley: Uh. why don't you take a nap, Whit...
John Whittaker: Oh, yeah? Well... you'll all be sorry, next time somebody falls off a clock tower!

Richard Maxwell: What are you accusing me of?
Bernard Walton: I don't know, what are you guilty of?

Connie Kendall: You said Latrina.
Eugene Meltsner: You're accusing me of mispronouncing my own fiancée’s name?
Connie Kendall: Not only that, but I think you called her the Spanish word for "bathroom."
Eugene Meltsner: That would be "el baño," which I don't believe I called her.

Connie Kendall: Remember that time when I was, like, sixteen and you said I had lack luster mental discernment?
Eugene Meltsner: Yes.
Connie Kendall: I realize now that you were just trying to say you loved me.
Eugene Meltsner: You hit the nail on the proverbial head, dear.

Edwin Blackgaard: <reading Margaret Faye's farewell statement> I will cook three meals a day, have a few children, <sly chuckle> and wear a veil over my head in his presence.
