I Slap Floor
Proverbs 15:21
“I Slap Floor” is episode #440 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger, and originally aired on April 1, 2000.
Summary
Bernard Walton tells Mandy Straussberg and her brother, David, about an extremely strange week in Odyssey.
Plot
Bernard is in Whit's End, when Mandy and David walk in. Bernard asks Mandy and David if they knew about the strange week in Odyssey. They reply no, and Bernard tells them about it. In the story, Richard Maxwell returns to town and gets jobs at various places in town, from the Timothy Center to the Electric Palace. At the same time, people begin acting strangely: Eugene and Connie prepare to get married, Edwin becomes engaged to a now very domestic Margaret Faye, and Harlow Doyle actually solves a case. Bernard got everyone together and they tried to hash out why everyone was acting so strangely. The only connection was revealed to be Richard, who then revealed himself to be Regis Blackgaard, and claimed to have always been Blackgaard. Bernard then told how, satisfied to hide under the disguise of Richard, Regis left the country and the doctors got everyone back to normal. Then Whit walks in, and David and Mandy ask him why he didn't tell them about the week. Whit just smiles and says, "Don't believe everything you hear."

Notes
- Trivia
- This episode was first broadcast on April 1 and was an elaborate April Fool's joke by Bernard — "I Slap Floor" being an anagram of "April Fools."
- This episode was meant to have Tasha Forbes in it, but the actress wasn't available so they used Richard Maxwell instead.
- If you enjoyed this episode, you may also enjoy reading this article... Novacom Rules the Earth!
- During the scene where Bernard calls everyone to order, a clock in the background strikes 8 times.
- This isn't the only episode with a presumed romantic relationship between Eugene and Connie. Other episodes include #260: “Naturally, I Assumed...”, #335 – #336: “Love is in the Air” and a more recent example, #806: “A Very Bassett Wedding, Part 2”.
- Allusions
- While explaining what inspired him to take up crowd-pleasers over Shakespeare, Edwin Blackgaard describes the famous "chocolate factory" scene from the 1950s sitcom I Love Lucy.
- References
- This episode references other AIO episodes and events:
- When Connie and Eugene discover their love for one another, they reference events in #194: “A License to Drive” and #254: “Truth, Trivia, and 'Trina”.
- Edwin asks Whit for permission to date Margaret Faye, referencing the event in #372: “For Whom the Wedding Bells Toll, Part 1”.
- Eugene states that "there is no sense in a long, drawn-out, seemingly never to end engagement" exactly like the one between Katrina and himself.
- Tom Riley tells Whit that he met an angel named Haggai who convinced him to change his life—a reference to #406: “Malachi's Message, Part 1”.
- When Eugene tells Connie the Spanish word for "bathroom" is "el baño," it is a reference to #171: “The Cross of Cortes, Part 1”.
- The mind-altering cologne is a possible reference to the strange perfume Eugene concocts in #255: “The Boy Who Cried 'Destructo!'”.
- Richard Maxwell turning into Dr. Blackgaard is a reference to #424 – #425: “Blackgaard's Revenge”.
- Connie references "that time when I was, like, 16," as an in-joke about Connie's nearly perpetual status as a teenager.
- Whit describes a new invention of his that sounds like the Strata-Flyer from the video series, and the odd scenario he describes using it in is a reference to a scene in A Fine Feathered Frenzy.

Quotes
Edwin Blackgaard: Would any of you care to join Margaret and me tonight? We're dining on cheeseburgers and then... then we're going to see that new action-adventure movie with lots of explosions and automobile chases... hoo hoo! Looks exquisite!
Harlow Doyle: Great Monroe Doctrine of 1823! So that's what killed the dinosaurs!
Harlow Doyle: And we all know I've never been this lucid and deductive before!
Everyone: That's for sure!
Connie Kendall: Oh, Eugene, your words just slide off your tongue like poetry.
Eugene Meltsner: You mean, mellifluously?
Connie Kendall: I think so.
John Whittaker: There is nothing wrong with my advice.
Sarah: Mr. Whittaker, look! I pierced my own ears, just like you said.
John Whittaker: Oh, very good, Sarah! Your parents will be so proud.
John Whittaker: Well, I-I'll prove it to you. Here — look at this, I came up with a new invention today. It's a flying machine, made out of a boat with oars. And big helium balloons. And a propeller! We can use it to rescue people!
Connie Kendall: Uh-huh.
Tom Riley: Uh. why don't you take a nap, Whit...
John Whittaker: Oh, yeah? Well... you'll all be sorry, next time somebody falls off a clock tower!
Richard Maxwell: What are you accusing me of?
Bernard Walton: I don't know, what are you guilty of?
Connie Kendall: You said Latrina.
Eugene Meltsner: You're accusing me of mispronouncing my own fiancée’s name?
Connie Kendall: Not only that, but I think you called her the Spanish word for "bathroom."
Eugene Meltsner: That would be "el baño," which I don't believe I called her.
Connie Kendall: Remember that time when I was, like, sixteen and you said I had lack luster mental discernment?
Eugene Meltsner: Yes.
Connie Kendall: I realize now that you were just trying to say you loved me.
Eugene Meltsner: You hit the nail on the proverbial head, dear.
Edwin Blackgaard: <reading Margaret Faye's farewell statement> I will cook three meals a day, have a few children, <sly chuckle> and wear a veil over my head in his presence.
