Psalm 27:1-14

11 Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be afraid?

2When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. 3Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident. 4One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. 5For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. 6Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD. 7Hear my voice when I call, O LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. 8My heart says of you, "Seek his face!" Your face, LORD, I will seek. 9Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior. 10Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me. 11Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. 12Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence. 13I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

14Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

The Right Choice, Part 1

“The Right Choice, Part 1” is episode #362 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on October 19, 1996.

Summary

Stopping in Chicago on the way home from the Middle East, Eugene learns that Katrina Shanks may be marrying someone else!

Plot

Whit and Eugene are finally coming home from the Middle East. Jason meets them in Chicago. Whit has to make a presentation on his time spent in Israel to the board of directors at Universal Press, and Jason is a member of that board. The board also has an offer for Whit, to go on a worldwide missions tour!

The layover in Chicago gives Eugene the opportunity to spend some time with Katrina. But when he tries calling her, no one answers the phone at her dorm room. Eugene thinks that's weird, so he tries her roommate's workplace, the University Bookstore. Katrina's roommate, Janice Mitchell, tells Eugene that Katrina has gone on a trip to the Lake Shore Lodge. She went with Brandon, whom Katrina admitted to be dating when she was last with Eugene (Love Is in the Air, Part 1 & Love Is in the Air, Part 2). Eugene actually drops the phone and nearly faints when he hears Janice's next revelation: Katrina and Brandon went to the Lake Shore Lodge to get engaged!

No one can believe that Katrina would take such a big step without telling Eugene. Whit suggests that Eugene call up the lodge to see if Katrina is there. Eugene does and is hit with another bombshell: Not only is Katrina there, she is part of the Shanks wedding party! Katrina is getting married to Brandon! Eugene doesn't know what to do. Jason tells Eugene to rent a car, drive up to Lake Shore Lodge, and fight for her, show her that he's not willing to let her go so easily! Eugene rushes off to follow Jason's advice.

At the Lake Shore Lodge, Eugene quickly deduces where the Shanks wedding party is and bursts in on them, just in time to hear the happy couple say "I do." But Eugene has burst in on Mr. and Mrs. Shanks renewing their vows. Eugene humiliates himself and ends up apologizing to Katrina. Eugene wants to talk with Katrina about their relationship, but Katrina wants to wait until they are both more rational. She turns and leaves.

Eugene becomes even more irrational. He acts crazy, logging into the Lodge's computer, and almost gets arrested. Katrina is so upset by this, she asks Brandon to take her home to Chicago. On the way home, Brandon and Katrina talk, and their affection grows. Brandon screws up his courage, and asks Katrina to marry him.

Trivia

Quotes

Jason Whittaker: Eugene went two weeks without actual verbal contact with Katrina? He must have broke out in hives.
John Whittaker: Well, he had a rash or two, but I blame that on his camel-riding.

Jason Whittaker: Did he mean to travel in his bath robe?
John Whittaker: That’s a caftan he bought from one of the street merchants before we left.
Jason Whittaker: Ah, he went native, huh?
John Whittaker: You know Eugene.

Eugene Meltsner: What am I gonna do?! It's unbelievable! She's not only engaged, she's getting married! Oh, why did I ever go to Israel! What am I gonna do?!
Jason Whittaker: What do you mean, what are you gonna do?
Eugene Meltsner: I believe my question was precise as it could be under the circumstances!
Jason Whittaker: Look, she's not married yet, is she?
Eugene Meltsner: No!
Jason Whittaker: Then it's not too late for you to rent a car, drive up to Lake Shore Lodge, and bring her back to her senses! ...Providing you love her enough to do it.
Eugene Meltsner: Of course I love her!
Jason Whittaker: Then fight for her!

John Whittaker: Do you think that was wise, Jason?
Jason Whittaker: What do you mean?
John Whittaker: Basically, you just sent Eugene on a mission to storm someone else's wedding. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.
Jason Whittaker: Yeah, you could be right. I just wish I could be there to see it.

Eugene Meltsner: <on the phone> No, Mr. Whittaker, I jest not. I rushed in and shouted that it would be a big mistake for Mrs. Shanks to marry Mr. Shanks! Who's that laughing in the background? —Well, tell Jason I don't share his sense of humor. Big help he turned out to be.

Eugene Meltsner: My senses have gone beyond the capacity to function. I can feel my pores fibrillating even as we speak!

Eugene Meltsner: You're making a terrible mistake, Mr. Shanks! You can't let this marriage happen!
Armitage Shanks: I can't? You disapprove of me marrying my wife?

Eugene Meltsner: ...Why are you wearing a wedding dress for Katrina's wedding, Mrs. Shanks?

Eugene Meltsner: I'm truly sorry, Katrina. I couldn't be more humiliated than if someone had painted my face blue and asked me to appear before a congressional subcommittee.
Singer: Yeah, and they could have you playin' in a dump like thi—hey, just kidding, folks. Who loves ya, huh?
