Summary
Young Bernard Walton meets a huge man named Ezekiel, who just might be an angel.
Plot
Tamika Washington has a question: "Does God still send angels to help people when they need it?" A story from Bernard might hold the answer...a story about Bernard himself when he was a boy!
Young Bernard is staying at the farm owned by his grandfather, who has just hired a new worker, Ezekiel. The boy is impressed with the burly laborer, especially after his run-in with Percy (a local bully). After Percy shoots a bird, Ezekiel seems to bring it back to life! He says God did it, but Bernard thinks Ezekiel must be an angel.
However, when a young girl disappears, the small town assumes that Ezekiel (who is a stranger to the town) kidnapped her! Bernard knows it’s not true, and warns Ezekiel before the townspeople get to him. The sheriff still picks up Ezekiel...and takes him over to the scene of the accident. Hanging by a thread from a sheer cliff, who will save the young girl?

Discussion Questions
- What could Tamika do to be an "angel" for Mrs. Dabnis?
- Why did Percy think Ezekiel was guilty?
- Ezekiel said that he wanted to have an open heart so God can use him. Can you think of ways that you can be "useful for God?"

Quotes
Bernard Walton: Will you stop interrupting? The plot's getting as thick as the grease in Bart Rathbone's hair!
Young Bernard: Fill me with popcorn and call me Cracker Jack!
Young Bernard: Wait! How did you do that?
Ezekiel: Twern't me. God does what God will. I just try not to get in the way.
Young Bernard: I want you to know, Mary Beth, I wasn't going to hug a girl till I was at least twenty-five. This is a sacrifice.
Tamika Washington: So it was Bernard who died.
Bernard Walton: What? No, I didn't die! I'm standing right here in front of you!
Tamika Washington: Oh. Right.
Tamika Washington: Is Mr. Whittaker here?
Bernard Walton: He's a half hour late is what he is. I've been jumping around like a cat in a hot tin roof covered with freshly laid tar.
