“Snow Day” is episode #466 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written and directed by John Fornof, and originally aired on March 17, 2001.
Summary
When school is canceled due to snow, Alex Jefferson accepts a job to deliver cookies to his grandmother. On the way, he must endure many trials and tribulations.
Plot
Monday morning, 7 a.m. Alex Jefferson is intensely studying the insides of his eyelids when suddenly... his alarm startles him to consciousness. The radio announcer informs him (slowly) that many schools have been canceled for the day, including — glory be! — Campbell County. Wahooo! Alex is free to frolic in the snow all day, and his cousin Cal Jordan invites him out to play! But a funny thing happens on his way out the door; his mother asks him to deliver cookies to his grandmother. It's a dangerous job, but someone has to take it. And Alex happens to be the only one in sight.
It's an arduous journey. First, Alex has to endure the hungry pangs of his cousin and his friends Nathaniel and Mandy, but he manages to fend them off. Then he has to defend himself in the snowball fight of his life against Rodney Rathbone and the Bones of Rath who want nothing more than to take the cookies for themselves. After Nathaniel and Mandy fool the Bones, Cal and Alex take off across town.
But the Bones aren't outwitted that easily. Alex and Cal are assaulted with snowballs again and it's only through the use of the Super Anti-Snow Missile Defense System (a.k.a. garbage can lid) that they escape once again. They're nearly home-free when they come to Gumper's Hill, the biggest, meanest hill in all of Odyssey. The boys race down the hill on their Super Anti-Snow... er... their garbage can lid. But Rodney is in hot pursuit after swiping another kid's sled. He lands in the creek at the bottom of the hill and lures the boys away from their victory by pretending to be drowning.
Having outwitted the poor boys, Rodney pops open the tin and stares inside. The cookies have Macadamia nuts in them, and he's allergic to nuts! Alex grabs the tin and runs, but Rodney isn't to be outwitted so easily... at least not for the fourth time! He chases after them and just when it looks like curtains for Alex and Cal, Mandy and Nathaniel show up to finish Rodney off with snowballs from a hidden location. Alex sees his chance, and runs for his grandmother's door; he manages to make it!
After the completed quest, Alex hands over the cookie tin to his grandmother, but when she opens the lid, all that's left is cookie crumbs! Alex asks for forgiveness, but his grandmother doesn’t even know why he's apologizing; they'll make the perfect topping for her equally famous apple crisp!
