1 Corinthians 10:13

13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Matthew 4:1-11
1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." 4Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" 5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6"If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" 7Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" 8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9"All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." 10Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"

11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

“The Devil Made Me Do It” is episode #413 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Marshal Younger and Phil Lollar, and originally aired on October 31, 1998.

Summary

Kids' Radio presents "Guilt Trip Jeopardy," "20/200," and the "Slimy Awards" to expose the lies of Satan and show believers how to have victory over temptation.

Plot

We can defeat Satan by using Scripture. "Kid's Radio" talks about the Devil, Satan, and three ways he deceives believers. The first vignette is "Guilt-Trip Jeopardy," in which three contestants - Lude Grinlord, Nasty Wormbucket, and Joey Niceworthy - answer questions about Joey's lies, selfishness, gluttony, and bad things Joey did in the fourth grade. With her sins exposed, Joey feels guilty and isn't sure God loves her. Connie, the host of "Kid's Radio," points out there is nothing we can do to separate ourselves from the love of God, and if we confess our sins, he will forgive us.

The next skit talks about how Satan uses temptation to entice believers to sin, but people don't have to succumb to it. This episode, "20/200," hosted by Bobbi Walker and Huge Gowns, investigates the case of Jerry Harry Larry Gary Perry, a thief who broke into homes and stole $100,000 worth of jewelry, video equipment, and cash. In court, Jerry pleads not guilty by reason of temptation, claiming that the devil made him do it. The "20/200" investigators go to the Garden of Eden to examine the devil's claims to have never tempted anyone. Adam and Eve blame their fall on the devil's suggestion to eat the forbidden fruit. The investigators then go undercover to catch the devil tempting Joe to steal a hot dog when no one is watching. It looks like Jerry's case will be successful until Melissa Markinson testifies that she and her friend, Carrie, were about to gossip about Patty, and she heard the devil tell her to go ahead and gossip, but she resisted the temptation. Hearing this new evidence, the jury finds Jerry guilty.

Finally, the last skit talks about the most powerful weapon against Satan: God’s word. The final story features the 2500th Annual Slimy Awards, honoring excellence in the demon industry where a lifetime achievement award is being given for Best Temptation. The show is ruined when the audience, who writhe in pain as the Slimy Awards experience technical difficulties, hears the words of Christ, resisting Satan’s temptation.

"Guilt Trip Jeopardy" is a parody of "Jeopardy!", "20/200" is a spoof of "20/20" ( character Bobbi Walker of host Barbara Walters, and Huge Gowns of Hugh Downs), and the Slimy Awards is a parody of the Academy Awards.
  • Related to the "Guilt Trip Jeopardy" parody: the first dollar value called was for $100. From the current version of Jeopardy!'s debut in 1984 until November 23, 2001, the first round dollar amounts ranged from $100-$500. Starting on November 26, 2001, the first round values were doubled to the present $200-$1000 range.
  • The demon "convention" in this episode may have been inspired by Screwtape's speech in C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Proposes a Toast.
  • The year 1995 is mentioned in this episode, one of the few times a specific year is mentioned when not referencing a historical event.
  • In the 20/200 report, Mr. Perry says, "I knew it was midnight cause the clock on the VCR kept blinking, you know, '12' '12' '12.'" Younger listeners may not understand that this is a joke. The clock display on a VCR blinks at 12:00 if it gets unplugged or the power goes out. People often didn't take the time to set the clock in their VCR, so it would blink 12:00 all the time. It probably was not midnight when Mr. Perry robbed the house.
