1 Samuel 16:7

7But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

A Model Child

“A Model Child” is episode #163 of the Adventures in Odyssey audio series. It was written by Paul McCusker, and originally aired on August 17, 1991.

Summary

All the girls are jealous of Monica Winters. They all want to be like her, but Melanie and Traci find out that Monica's life may not be as great as they thought.

Plot

Bart Rathbone and the Electric Palace are sponsoring Odyssey’s first beauty contest, junior division. Melanie and Traci are a bit disappointed because they know their parents won’t let them enter such a silly contest. But one of their friends, Monica, has entered the contest, and she’s taking it very seriously. Or rather, her mother is.

Monica’s mom insists that Monica act much older than her 11 years. She won’t let Monica play or swim with the other girls. She buys Monica makeup and the latest teenage fashions. She places her daughter on diets, all to try and mold her into a model child.

Monica doesn’t like all these restrictions, but she has too much respect for (and fear of) her mother to rebel. But when Monica can't fit into the dress her mother has bought her for the beauty contest, she runs away to the forest where Melanie and Ann find her. Monica is devastated, she knows her mother will be angry that she couldn’t lose enough weight to wear the dress.

Ann and Melanie start to take her back to town when Monica collapses. They rush her to the hospital, where they find out she has been undernourished. Later, Monica and her mother both get counseling help. Monica won’t be winning any beauty contests, but she will get back to being a normal little girl.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why did Whit and the Jacobs think beauty contests are silly?
    • Do you agree?
    • Why or why not?
  2. Have you ever judged someone by the way they look?
  3. How can you start looking at people’s hearts instead?
  4. Read 1 Samuel 16:7. How does God define beauty?

Quotes

Melanie Jacobs: Do you know how old she is?
John Whittaker: Monica? Oh, fifteen or sixteen, I guess.
Melanie Jacobs: She's eleven.

Bart Rathbone: Guilt by association.

Dale Jacobs: Or, haven't you heard of freedom of speech?
Bart Rathbone: Yeah, I heard of it. I think it's a shame when people take advantage of it like this.
John Whittaker: You mean, when they say things you don't like.
Bart Rathbone: Exactly!
