[edit] Description
This album laid the groundwork for the imaginative writing, lively characters, and heartwarming stories that are the hallmark of Adventures in Odyssey. If you are an Odyssey veteran, then sit back and relive a bit of history. If you've only recently started listening to the series, these early shows will be a real treat.
This album has been release in three different versions.
[edit] Album Differences
This album has been released under four different titles. The first two were called Odyssey USA and simply Adventures in Odyssey. Both contained the same episodes, including Odyssey USA references and the unedited Officer Harley episodes Lights Out at Whit's End, Promises, Promises, Doing Unto Others, The Tangled Web, Bobby's Valentine, and Missed It by That Much. These albums were pulled after Focus on the Family decided to remove the Officer Harley episodes from availability.
The third release of this album was called The Early Classics and featured edited versions of two of the Officer Harley episodes (Promises, Promises, and The Tangled Web) and completely removed four episodes (Lights Out at Whit's End, Doing Unto Others, Bobby's Valentine, and Missed It by That Much). This album included three episodes that were remakes of some of the original Officer Harley episodes (An Act of Mercy, Isaac the Benevolent, and The Trouble with Girls) and also included the episode Recollections to round out the collection of twelve episodes. All of the old episodes contained new "wraps", which replaced the Odyssey USA references with Adventures in Odyssey.
When it came time to re-release this album for the Gold Audio CD series in 2005, the Officer Harley remakes were deemed out of place since, although the plots were from the beginning of Odyssey, they included episodes which contained newer characters (such as Eugene Meltsner who wouldn't be introduced until Album 02: Stormy Weather). These three episodes were removed from this album and other older and unreleased episodes took their places. Two of the new episodes were A Member of the Family, Part 1 and A Member of the Family, Part 2 which had not been rebroadcast since the Odyssey USA days until right before this release. Rather than edit the original Odyssey USA "wraps", a completely new one was recorded, the first new "wrap" for an older episode in many years.
The other new episode added for the Gold Audio re-release to make 12 episodes was A Change of Hart.
The result of these various re-releases is that this album is the only one to have featured 19 different episodes since its first release, though only 12 episodes were available at one time.
